Lee_K_81 Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Anybody have problems with the fantastic feature of a voltage switch on power supplies of PC's. Our little darlings have just discovered that if you change it, it makes the PC go bang and smell of burning! Any solutions that work? We're on the brink of getting a load of plastic and glueing it on-to the back of the PSU, however if one then goes of natural causes i'm guessing it would invalidate the warranty! Can't win!

We too have had the same problem with the switching PSUs but it was when i was a student here... and they used super glue to stop that happening. As for the mice. we too thought about that problem but when we first brought in optical mice we secuered the mouse cable to the keyboard cable and the monitor vga cable... not a problem. The balled mice were much more of a problem than optical... but there are a few kids that think its funny to blind each other with the optical light... god help the next generation of kids.

We put PC's are in cages, not locked ones, just baskets under desk with only the front accessible to the kids. The kids physically lift the PCs out of the cages and unplug stuff. God knows what the teachers are doing while the kids are under the desk messing with the computers! Seems to be worse in the suite that teachers can book, there is no sense of ownership and they dont seem to care, yet they're the first to complain..... i'll finish ranting now

Must admit when we told the teacher how much a PSU was (Fujitsu-Siemens - £75ea) it soon stopped happening! As for mice, never had any problem with opticals been targetted and sooo much better than ball ones.

tom_newton Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Thankfully some of the newer PSUs seem to auto-switch - I brought a Pc back from the US (we bought it for doing a tradeshow over there) only to realise it hadn't a switch... my first experience of an auto-switching (PC) PSU was somewhat disconcertiong... but I plugged it in to our (good, honest red blooded) 230v supply and it worked fine. In fact, I think it likes our leccy better than the american stuff

mac_shinobi Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 daft thought here but wouldnt the best idea be to call the manufacturer of the pc's and explain whats happening and see if they have a solution which will A. stop them from flicking the switch which makes the PSU go bang and B. Not invalidate the warranty That way it stops the kids from doing it on purpose and you still get to keep the warranty. Who knows they might just get you to super glue the switch so that its stuck on 240 volts and not able to move to 120. short of that maybe buy or get them to replace the power units with power units that dont have any switches
goodhead Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 in 3rs its only happened once. It made such a loud bang, the kid was realy shken up by it. I dont think he'll do that again. Most of our pcs are dell USFF pcs so dont have that switch.
