Backup Exec help needed please

I'm lost in Backup Exec licensing! What do I need to backup a server 2008r2 box that has files and is running Exchange 2010?

assuming you already have your main Backup Exec Server licence (ie the one for the machine which runs the backup job) then all you should need is a Backup Exec Exchange licence (as it includes the Backup Exec Windows Server bit)

Also assuming your version of backup exec can actually "talk to" server 2008.

im sure you will need backup exec 2010 to backup files from server2008R2.

At the moment I've only got the demo version of backup exec 2010 which works fine with server 2008r2.

I believe what you want is SYVE11915, I can't be 100% certain as I ordered 12.5 licence and it upgraded when BE2010 came out.

 

As you've only got the demo version, how many servers do you have on your site that you want to cover? You'll need to get the BE2010 Server licence (SYVE370) as well (this includes the agent for the machine running the server - as long as you don't need SQL or Exchange agent on that server)... I'll try to explain better...

 

BE2010 Server for Windows (ie the main backup application) includes a Windows System Agent (usable on the BE2010 server machine)

Each of the Additional agents (like SQL or Exchange) include the Windows System Agent.

 

If you have one server which holds all files, runs Exchange and does the backup, you'll need the BE2010 server licence and an Exchange Agent Licence.

 

If in doubt, check with the licensing folks at your suppliers (then you have some come back if they suggest the incorrect licence!)

Wow... quotes are coming in around the £800-£900 mark all just to backup Exchange and the files. Surely there is something cheaper that I can run on the same box and do the same job? With Server 2003 I just scripted NTBackup and it worked fine, talk about a hammer to crack a nut.

Backup exec presumes you don't have everything on one server - over multiple servers it can work out cheaper... I wonder whether Windows Server Backup may do what you need (haven't looked into it, so can't say for definite - BE gives you granular backup/recovery, which I don't think WSB does, but do you need to be able to retrieve individual messages for exchange mailboxes?)

Thanks Will, just looking at WSB now. Had to make a virtual disk on the NAS as WSB didn't like backing up to the share. I'll report further when I've tested WSB fully

Im sure the 2008R2 WIndows backup now has access to backup mail stores, im sure i read that in some release notes of 2008R2. Just install server backup from the features menu.

Im using the build in backup in 2008 R2 to backup exchange fine.

barracudaware always seem a decent alternative to BE, we looked into it once but decided to stick to using BE which is supported by our server installation company. You'd need Yosemite Server Backup Plus to be able to use an exchange agent but it's cheaper than BE and you have scalability to backup upto 3 servers without needing to buy more agents. hang on... he might not have exchange 2007 installed on a 2008R2 server... that could be a problem... unless he shares the drive which the mailboxes are stored on....
