neph has been on QI quibbles, then!!!

;) :)

A commonly seen factoid on the net says that the tongue is the strongest muscle in the human body. This is completely wrong, no matter what definition of "strongest" one uses. The strongest muscle will actually be the largest (which means it's either your gluteus maximus or the quadriceps in your thigh) or the one that can exert most pressure on an object which means it's your jaw muscle. A strong case though can be made for the uterus, which is probably the strongest "pound for pound", it weighs around a kilogram, but during childbirth can exert a force equivalent to a modern longbow. Fact #49: In 2008 the British Army was called in to investigate a suspicous package and so they blew it up in a controlled explosion, only to discover that it was a parcel containing leaflets on how to deal with suspicious packages.

Fact #51: The most boring place in Great Britain is a field outside Ousefleet, near Scunthorpe, according to the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map. It is the blankest square kilometre in the country, with only part of an electricity pylon in it.

I think you could broaden that claim to just Scunthorpe in general to be honest. Sunny Scunny, ****hole of the East!

Fact #52: The ant has the largest brain in comparison to its body size and utilises roughly 83% of it.

I had one of those, and after about a week, they finally started drilling tunnels down. Looked quite cool. :)

Fact #54: A galactic year is 250 million Earth-years. This is the time it takes for our solar system to make one revolution around the Milky Way Galaxy.

Fact #55: If all of the items that were made and used by man were mined and removed from the all of the seas and oceans, and split between each person equally, every person on earth would get approximately 20kgs of gold, 17kgs of silver, 82kgs of bronze, 12kgs of aluminium, 390kgs of wood, and 13kgs of iron. The sea level would also drop by approximately 9cm globally.

I didn't think that we "mined" wood?

Also, if it includes all of the available "items" on the planet, i would have thought that iron would be much more as the core of the Earth has quite a fair bit floating (or is that sinking) around!

Re-read it, he meant all of the stuff (for want of a better word) that's dumped in the ocean, presumably waste and ship wrecks mainly (that's how I read it anyway) :)

Correct from shipwrecks, waste etc.

In that case, 20kgs of gold each does seem a tad excessive!!

The Officially reported gold holdings only has 30,562.5 tonnes kicking around (and most certainly NOT in the sea), which is somewhat short of the required nearly 140 million tonnes to meet #55's requirements ;)

they cannot account for the amount in the sea, EG Gulf of Mexico has the richest deposits of shipwrecked gold (from Cuba, Central and South America), however because it is so deep they cannot salvage it, and therefore they are unable to account for it. And bare in mind I did say approximately :) Edited by featured_spectre

Still can't be right, current estimates reckon that in human history we've only ever mined 165k tonnes of gold, 20kgs per person is, as Martin says, something like 140 million tonnes!

I'm sure I read before that if you smelt all the gold ore that has been mined to date, it would only fill 1 Olympic sized swimming pool.

Might be completely wrong there, but I think it was on QI before.

in that case my sources must be incorrect...i shall look into it

Haven't you learnt that your sources are winding you up, and then lurking in this thread to watch you get torn to shreds :p

Or slightly overfill the one at Portsmouth :)
