New admin server!

the admin server at our place is getting quite old now and needs replacing, does anybody have any specs to hand that i should be looking for?

 

And who would you buy this off! does it have to be county with respect to their maintanence of sims and possibly not supporting if you buy elsewhere?

or can you buy this from anywhere?

Just your Admin server just hold SIMS or does it serve any other apps or purposes??

@krisd32: Westfield do the SIMS support for Lancashire but you do not have to purchase your hardware/software from them. Ring them up and they will recommend a particular model of DELL server and will offer to sell it to you. If you purchase that same model from elsewhere for less money they will still set it up for a fixed fee.

 

If you buy in a different model of server, you will be charged the hourly rate (which actually works out less as far as I can see).

HP Proliant DL380 G4s you can get some great bargins from teh distys for the 3ghz Xeons with 2GB Ram and 2x 72GB U360 10K Hard Drives, I think I got a quote of £1200 for that spec from Insight the other day, reason they are such good value is that its the old model the G4 we have the G5s now, but they are perfectly good servers, infact I prefer them in the DLs, where as I like the ML G5s.

Our entire network is based on HP DL380 servers, very reliable and very easy to fix if parts fail (most of it is modular and easily plugs in or unplugs while the server is running) HP support is also excellent, they'll send you a new drive within 24hrs if one of them fails, no questions asked. They also look quite neat

 

We've got a mixture of G3 and G4 servers, we missed out on the G5s when we ordered 4 new ones for the summer.
