Zoom7000 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 We currently have RIS setup to run from our "Server1". It had it's own partitioned space of 7Gb, which is now full! I have no bays left for more space, however, we now have a new "Server3" with plenty of space. Question is, if I install the RIS component on to "Server3", how can I make the PCs look to "Server3" as opposed to "Server1"? Do I need to uninstall RIS from "Server1"?
ChrisH Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I dont think it matters as long as there is a RIS server defined in AD. As for the sourcepath for windows that will be pointing at the old server you could change that with a startup script.
Nij.UK Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Im not too hot on RIS, but in AD is there not a box to tick which says allow connections to this server or something along them lines? if you uncheck that and check the server that is going to except the connection will that not work? Apoligise if ive got this completely wrong
Zoom7000 Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 When I right click properties on the current RIS server (Server1) I have a tab in the Window that says Remote Install, and it has the option I'm looking for. However, "Server3" doesn't have this tab. I presume once I've installed RIS on the server I'll get this tab. Or at least I hope so! Chris, I didn't understand what you meant by changing the sourcepath, using a startup script. I don't currently have any startup scripts for the server, so there must be another way to change this.
Nij.UK Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I think when you set up RIS on server 3.... you have to authorise it with Active Directory if i remember correctly.... and then i think u will have that option when u look at the properties of the server
Nij.UK Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I think this is done automatically when you run the "Remote Installation Services Setup" wizard RIS Setup
Nij.UK Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 From Microsoft Authorize RIS in Active Directory After you install RIS, the RIS server must be authorized in Active Directory. Authorization determines control of which RIS servers can serve client computers on the network. If the RIS server is not authorized in Active Directory, client computers that request service cannot contact the RIS server. NOTE: To authorize a RIS server in Active Directory, you must be logged on as an enterprise administrator or a domain administrator of the root domain. 1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DHCP. 2. In the left pane, right-click DHCP, and then click Manage Authorized Servers. 3. If your server is not listed, click Authorize, type the name or the IP address of the RIS server, and then click OK. NOTE: If you are prompted to confirm the RIS server, verify the name and IP address, and then click OK. 4. Click Close, and then quit the DHCP console. Hope this helps
Zoom7000 Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks for that, I'll give it a try later!
tosca925 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 You cant copy and paste the images across from your old server. You have to restore from a backup. We did this around 18 months ago. IIRC set up RIS on the server you want and the choose the drive for your images, then restore your other images from the other server froma back up. Not sure if all th above is correct its been that long.

Zoom7000 Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 I'm not fussed about the images, It'll give me an excuse to create more up to date ones!
ChrisH Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I copied my images over with robocopy with no bother at all. They were only flat images but it shouldnt make any difference.
ajbritton Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Re copying RIS builds (I don't call them images 'cos they're not)... As long as you let RISETUP complete (ie - give it an XP CD to create the default build), there is no problem with copying in extra ones. It should be safe to delete the original once the new ones are copied in.
john Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 I have done that, done a new RIS install, done the XP CD and then just lifted my images from one box to another.
ChrisH Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 I have done that, done a new RIS install, done the XP CD and then just lifted my images from one box to another. I may have had to do that as well now you come to mention it .
