'Print Manager Plus - Client installation methods

I am testing print manager plus academic and they have provided a silent install of a cleint app entitled 'PMP_EUIT_Silent.EXE'. They say that you need to use SMS or a third party utility to 'push' the install around the client computers.

 

I don't have SMS (I don't think it's free is it?) or a third party installer. Can I use Software installation in GP for rhis or does it have to be an msi package? Or can I run a script at startup to install the app?

I use the same thing.

 

The way that I installed it was via GPO but you will need to repackage it into an MSI file before you can do that.

 

For repacakging I use Masai which is very easy to use and can be found here

 

Then it just a case of pushing it out via GPO.

You can install the client onto your machine and copy the program (a single file) to a share. You then just need to add a registry entry pointing to your PMP server.

 

It's all in the manual! (or at least it's in mine!)

If you have an EXE which will do a silent install, you can create an MSI wrapper, which will simply launch the EXE, by using the Windows Installer Wrapper Wizard (see Essential Software WIKI)

which manual? I can't find any instructions in the pdfs that I downloaded from the PMP site.

 

Which part of the registry do I edit and do I have to do this for every pc?

Mine says:

End User Inquiry Tool

The End User Inquiry Tool is a stand alone utility program

installed on each Windows client that allows users to query the

Print Manager Plus database for their remaining printer credit and

pages printed.

Installing the End User Inquiry Tool

Run the Setup program to install the End User Inquiry Tool on

each workstation.

The installation program places the End User Inquiry Tool in the Windows Startup group, and launches it into the tray area.

Users can place their mouse over the tray icon and see how many pages they have left at any time. The message times out

after a short interval.

Configuring the End User Inquiry Tool for use on a client machine

The End User Inquiry Tool needs to know the machine name of the Print Manager Plus server for fast start up. This value can

be registry set at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Software Shelf International Inc\Print Manager Plus – Client. Create a

new String value here, named Server. The value of it will be the machine name of the Print Manager Plus server on your

network.

Distribution

For distribution to client machines, an installer is provided on the program CD. If you have difficulty configuring the registry key,

please contact Software Shelf technical support.

Has anyone tried the sql / db and webpage way of helping users know how much credit they have (left)?

 

I did try it but didnt have any luck [ver 5.5 tho]

Could someone do me a BIG favour? I've been trying to wrap an msi around this silent install and just been getting nowhere. When I use Masai installer to repackage, the msi freezes mid-way through. I have tried to download and install Windows Installer Wrapper Wizard but that tells me there are files missing.
