Moodle - Details of whose logged in

Due to the current snowy weather our head would like to know if it is possible to pull a list of users who are currently connected from the VLE (moodle)

 

Does anybody know a way of doing this as i havn't got a clue - our moodle is hosted and run by our LEA.

Moodle has an Online Users (last 5 minutes) widget which you can view as the admin - this gives an idea. You can then use the Site Administration/Reports/Logs tool, which can dump the day's site activity for you.

If you log in as admin, then go to REPORTS then LOGS you can view the logs which hold information on who has logged in and what they were doing on specific days. Hope this helps.

Alternatively, if you have webstats software running (Google stats, AnalogX, AwStats or similar) on your webserver then you can just use that and filter for your Moodle base url, or grab your webserver's log files and again, filter it for the Moodle base url.

I've just started using Google Analytics on our Moodle site (years after first using on our other sites - not sure why I didn't do it earlier!). Its quite amazing to see how heavily it is used out of hours. Really useful tool.

The Online Users standard moodleblock shows members of a course logged on, and adding this to your home page (site course) shows all users currently online. You could even override the roles on that block so that just staff see the block.

The online moodle block shows me all i need - i think the others won't work (although not tried) as i don't host the site (hosted by lea)

Dont dismiss the log files either - they show a lot of information and are also part of the "standard" moodle install so dont need any server tinkering. Each course has a stats section as does the main course - you will see a link next to the admin name when you login to them.
