*sigh*

vista ultimate didnt work - well it looked like it had but IE and firefox fell over and the antivirus did as well. Couldn't get the drivers in that it still needed and then it just fell over.

I just feel that this laptop can be mended. Don't know what to try now. I don't have an XP disc with the sata drivers on it and I have had no luck trying to slipstream them or put them on during installation. The Advent 5611 doesnt have the option to set the drive to IDE so that's a no go.

Anyone any ideas?

PM me if you want to try a XP disk with SP3 streamlined.

Go into the BIOS and stick SATA into IDE compatability mode.

That was my first thought but there isn't such an option on this lovely advent 5611 laptop - I thought I was going mad but I have googled it and there really isn't.

I put XP home with all updates on it and it still blue screened after the initial driver install.

So...it will install Vista ultimate but doesnt ask for a licence key. Looks OK but IE and the antivirus (avast) fall over almost immediately. There are also some drivers missing - eg network controller which I cannot find, or rather the ones I do find dont seem to work.

Just don't want to give up on this one...

Well why dont you try Windows 7 or Ubuntu out and see how stable it is. By what you have said it sounds like the hardware is dodgy. Hopefully it will be just some dodgy drivers, and then you can take it from there.

Have you tried a new hard drive btw?
