creese Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Anyone know what oil I need for a Rover 200 TDi? Every promising search result is blocked here.
sippo Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I use Castrol Magnatec 10W-40. I have a Peugeot Diesel 206. Should be similar. 1
K.C.Leblanc Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I buy my oil from the local motor factors. Friendly, good prices and they'll know what sort you need. 1

I have to get it pretty quick so will try Costco, then I have to do a motorway journey. The light came on just before I parked up this morning.
BenABF Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 :S the oil warning light would probably mean its too late and some damage has been done
Hedghog Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 10 - 40 fully or part synthetic should do for any turbo diesel
Abaddon Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 AS far as I know, it's a pressure gauge, not a level gauge. Could indicate more serious issues, such as impending oil pump failure, or blocked oil filter.

The light generally means the oil pressure is low, hopefully because you're low on oil rather than anything else!
Dos_Box Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Halfords ahve a rather wonderful guide next to their engin oil shelf which allows you to select the make, model and year and then give you the correct recommendation.
BenABF Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) If the engine has run low on oil pressure which is what the light is indicating, it will cause serious friction issues. It can cause bearing shells to get scored and next thing you know the bottom end will be knocking. I'm not trying to scare you but I'm talking from experience. This on a petrol Vauxhall engine, but I don't know how resilient the Rover diesels are. Edited November 18, 2010 by BenABF

Butuz Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Some engines are more succeptible than others. For E.g. I used to run my old Mazda 323 with the oil level barely touching the dipstick. The oil light used to only come on if you cornered to hard!! The mazda could take it (and more) but I wouldn't do that to a rover or vauxhall. Butuz
creese Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 I have had the red light come on a number of times whilst I have had it, topping it up has done the trick. It's a useful car for carrying building materials but if it came to it I could get those delivered so as not to ruin a better car. Memory problems means I can't remember what oil I use on the earlier occasions.

Butuz My old Xantia would often go off the bottom of the dip stick. But then it did like it's oil.

Coming from 2 rovers and 3 Vauxhalls, they'll take it without drama. I've had plenty of "no shows" on the dipstick, with no red light. The Z16SE does like oil though. The X16SZR and C16SE in my previous and current second car are equally ignored until they rattle. Z16SE is rattling now, but that could just be the hydro tappets. Heyho. I always go for the indestructible 8 valvers though.. Lovely little engines. Oil wise, I bung in any old cheap tat. 5/40, 10/40, 15/50, it's all good. I ran the X16SZR for a few miles on a mix of oil and..might have been parafin. I forget. Flushed the engine out a treat, that did.
creese Posted November 19, 2010 Author Posted November 19, 2010 Update. Managed to get to Costco without a red light coming on. Topped up with plenty synthetic oil at about £25 for 5ltr. Made a trip to and from Cwmbran with no problems.
3s-gtech Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I suspect you have an oil level warning light, and oil pressure. Some car manufacturers state to expect 1 litre of oil used per 1000 miles - it's not unknown for 1/1000km. Sounds fine.

I did survive a truck trying to rearrange the panelling on the doors, luckily it is a turbo, so I could put my foot down and get in front of the pillock as he changed into my lane not giving a damn that it empty. He was about 6 inches from wiping me out.
3s-gtech Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Yeah, the engine in yours is the update of the Prima unit, not too bad a turn of speed, tough, and easy on juice. Not a bad car really, as a hack.

Not a bad car really, as a hack. It does the job at the moment. Once the building work is done at home I'll look for something else. It wasn't much fun as the Severn Crossing II was down to 40 with spray. Luckily nothing was in front of me, braking wasn't an option.
Sirbendy Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 It's been a fair while since I've seen a Perkins Prima, thinking on...heh. Friend of mine had a Maestro, ex plod with a 2.0td diddled with prima in it..went like hot snot, even funnier since the shell was a compete base metal bumper spec.
creese Posted November 24, 2010 Author Posted November 24, 2010 UPDATE: Car died on Friday, totally unrelated to the oil thing. What a waste of 5 ltrs of oil :-( Got a nice simple 106 (I think) to keep me going for a while.
