Would you trust facebook to run your email?

Am I the only one shuddering at this news? I don't trust facebook with facebook accounts! What will they do when they have access to someone's entire world on email?

Simple answer... no, I wonder though just how many people, fully aware of FB's history when it comes to privacy, will switch for convenience?

Many people now use Facebook instead of email - it's the way they keep in touch with each other so for them the idea of Facebook running their email is just an obvious extension of what now happens.

 

I'd guess the trite phrase "we need to educate users" is probably needed here but I've no idea how you actually do that :-(

No ... but I don't one hundred percent trust Google to run my mail. I barely trust Apple but at least I know what I am paying for there.

No. I am currently happy with my gmail and google apps email for domains, but may well at some point migrate to my own server instead.

 

I can't trust Facebook at all, and only use it with the full understanding that they are releasing what I say to the world.

Certainly not. I don't trust anybody with anything, which I host everything I need myself (well, I trust my dedicated provider and ISP at arms reach, there has to be a compromise somewhere...)

I simply dread the privacy settings they'll require you to have in facebook email... they manipulate things so that you do things for their convenience, not your privacy.

 

Like others, I don't really trust any of the email providers, but generally their privacy settings are straightforward.

I will be steering well clear of it. I don't even use my Facebook account tbh and should probably deactivate it. I must admit I am a bit of a Gmail and all over Google lover.

So it's not email, it's a revamped messaging system:

While those using it can attach their Facebook name to an @facebook.com e-mail address this was not compulsory,

but the settings will probably lead you into it anyway. (Cynical? Me?! )

I am sure its not targetting Education, or have any features that education needs, and I imagine would have to be a totally descrete site for you guys to even consider it ?

 

We (Lightspeed Systems) have launched a hosted student email system (I wont post any details incase its against the rules), and I would be interested to know what those in education feel is the most important features of a student based email system (Archiving, profanity checking, reporting, interface, single sign on etc).......maybe should be a new thread, but that might be breaking some rules also

Loads of people will switch to using Facebook email for convenience. My other half is already thinking it sounds like a great idea because she's always on facebook. I don't like the sound of it at all. As others have said, they can't be trusted with the accounts they've got, let alone people's emails. I don't use Facebook at all, but if I did I'd certainly not use it for email.

I keep FB and my professional contacts/networks seperate, i ONLY use FB for social stuff. Mostly because there are a few drunk photos of me there!

I suppose it depends on who the user is. Aside from all the security worries. For example, my partner would love it. She uses facebook quite alot and also has a gmail account. She's find it really useful to have email under facebook. She's also not be worried about the @facebook.com email address as she only uses her email to keep in contact with family members over seas and to receive offers from Next, tesco etc..

 

On the other hand, anyone who wants to use their email for professional reasons or even if it's just related to professional reasons such as job interviews, message boards etc.. wouldn't really want an Email address @facebook.com, in my opinion.

Don't know about you, but I manage my life through gmail - all my email addresses, both for home and school, co-ordinated in one place and google calendars for work and home use.
