need to move home folders retaining share & permissions

Our admin server has only 700mb free on a 35 gb hard drive.

I have a drive that has 16 gb free and would like to know if there is a way to move home folders retaining share & permissions.

The server is a 2003 box (our only admin server)

the userfolders dir is 8gb so moving it to the second drive would provide me with breathing space, until our next spend (SAN hopefully, i am regularly having to move stuff around to accomdate or provide space where needed) any body else have this issue LACK OF SPACE in an age where were have terrabytes of storage avaialable at reason costs.

p.s £100 down, car oveheated just as i pulled into work today. AA came in and diagnosed failed waterpump! Great! had to have day off work as the AA man had to either take my car to a garage or my home. £100 was the cost to repair it. I did get the day off though to sort my car out, benefits of a flexible manager. BTW i did get some work done via the vpn link i have to the school

THeres a few posts like this about you need something like robocopy to preserve permissions and share info can be exported from the registry.

We have Secure copy on our network with two licences.

I only post this reply incase you also have Classlink and have a way of carring out you move without investing in software which you may not need.

MSBackup will do it and retain the NTFS permissions but you'll have to recreate the shares yourself. Just knock a script together.

I'm doing exactly the same thing now - moving home folders to a new server. I'm doing one share at a time, then making the necessary changes in AD. I'll probably be here all week.

 

robocopy source destination /E /COPYALL

 

retains the ownership and NTFS ACL's

 

Robocopy is available from the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools

I mean one share for all pupils, one share for teaching staff, one share for admin staff etc.

 

There's about 20 shares altogether.

As DaveP we use this Secure Copy. Very powerful solution. It keeps all ntfs permissions, shares and share permissions intact while copying.
