Thanks Alex I am looking for the facility to host a document storage and learning environment (SharePoint being my product of choice), possibly a hosted VM with SP build into that, but the end result being the same. The environment will be a more static, website type result with the facility to upload and maintain documents, and with many pages/sites devised to deliver content interactive content.

I am looking for something more server hosted, much like having my own server that I can arrs about with, that is web based. People will say is it secure is it linked to the MIS. Well how many VLE's are truely interoperable with their MIS, how many VLE's push their scorm results to the MIS?

Live @ edu seems the way to go if it's an educational establishment, though if you want the full hosting type service, then look at the business side of things like Microsoft Business Productivity Online , i think that's what the acronym is for.. or the new Office 365 live. they are paid for but will give you better management i reckon, plus you can just buy into sharepoint hosting. I'm looking for similar here but it's not launched for business use yet. Live @ edu will bring those features, but it seems slow to develop. I tried using the skydrive feature to share some files, but when i want to create a distribution list, i have to make my own, it wont allow me to use other live @ edu users from my contacts list. It's still a little bit too hotmaily for me, things don't appear to link together as you'd want. At least i couldn't find how, and i've got the Master Teacher Certification for it like Alex!! Overall it's a good setup for free. I'm really liking Office live, and not needing to have Office installed on the PC anymore. eliminates all those issues with incompatible version of Office documents, or home users with Works instead of Word! We're just testing out collaborative documents. 1

The reason this won't work is because Windows Live SkyDrive falls into the user-owned & managed half of the service. Live@edu has two distinct halves: Outlook Live, and Windows Live. The institution has full control over the Outlook Live half of the service, which is delivered using Exchange Online. Because all users of Live@edu are required to have a Windows Live ID they get access to the Windows Live services but these cannot be managed beyond being able to co-brand and limit access. You can share files held in a SkyDrive with anyone; you just can't pull a list directly from your Outlook Live GAL, unfortunately. 1

yvonnew Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 For free web space you could try office live for small business. Not really sharepoint though. But excellent for free. If you are looking for a hosting company to offer what you are looking for, then I have used Apps4Rent and they have been good. I have used them for SharePoint 2007 to collaborate on projects. Basically you pay for what you need to use. You will find though that SharePoint 2010 will be more expensive at the moment. Also remember that SharePoint 2010 is all running on 64bit. Anyway at least with a hosted solution you do not have to pay out for expensive hardware. SharePoint 2010 is really brillant. Could talk about it forever and all the cool features and integration with Office and third party software. Yvonne

Presumably you cannot use the office 365 for education, for which there are tiers of pricing, including free for students, and only start paying higher up, and for sharepointy things. I guess, you should be able to get pricing for the business side of things. I'm interested in when its finalised and available out here, as i've been plugging the benefits of exchange online for a while, but the business version hasn't made it out here yet I think EduTech offers free hosting for schools and educational bods, and it includes sharepoint as he's used it for a while, might be worth seeing what he can do for you seeing as though you are serving the Education community.
GREED Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 @Vik: My current company sits in a funny position between business and education, and do not qualify for schools agreement or the likes unfortunately. However we are looking to become a Microsoft Academy, to take advantage of the learning materials they have for our apprentices, and as part of that we get a number of licences for MS products. I did speak to MS at BETT and they indicated that 365 for small business might be the best offer, but they could not say how this might integrate with MS Academy. This is somethign I want to delve into at the MS meeting in March. We are still looking at solutions, it seems to keep being put on the back burner, but I want to take advantage of the facilities we can offer for remote learning, ergo reduced costs, ergo better quality and flexibilty of learning, ergo better product. If we get hosted this all becomes very reachable, but an internal solution might be the first step. Separate personal projects are also in mind using SharePoint, and maybe 365, which do require hosted, but doubt this will fall into the 'educational' bracket.
