tech_guy Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 The LG have decided that they can make staff more productive by giving them lots of amazing applications on their computers.... ...the only major issue is that they don't want to spend any money on said sparkly applications that are designed to turn the staff into creative geniuses, so that leaves open source and other free apps.... Please can you give examples of some wonderful free apps that you use with your staff and that they actually use and enjoy using? So far I've come up with: Open Office The Gimp Pivot CutePDF ANDIT'SFRIDAYANDI'VELOSTTHEWILLTOLIVEWITHTHIS...... Help much appreciated!

You want to give staff handbrake...to give them new and exciting methods of pirating content? Personally I don't think finding an app and trying to shoehorn a use to it is a bit backward, surely you want to find an issue or area of development and find the solution to it? 1

mac_shinobi Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 not sure if they will use it as in an application but may be handy ref drive letters so that when they insert there Pen drives it will show up without conflicting with network drives as you can use USB DLM to ensure that drive letters are excluded from being used so you would add your network drive letters in the ini file in the correct section and then you could manually assign a few drive letters for usb devices whether ext hdd or pen drives or w/e USB drive letter manager - USBDLM If you mean on memory sticks then there is portable apps - plenty of free apps on there that are open source which may be of interest PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives whilst on the subject I could do with an open source suggestion for sticky notes myself

We give staff knives in cookery dont we...? Besides; "HandBrake does not include any code to decrypt commercial DVDs. Yes, we know, it used to, but it doesn't anymore."

I don't see how that could aid innovative teaching day to day. however it could be used very easily, and most likely, to convert copyright restricted media. Something which, based on my own experiences, teachers need no encouragement to do
mac_shinobi Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Drop Box would be a good one - as long as they used it frequently to synch there important work that way they would have a copy on said laptop, if they used your storage on your servers then that would be another backup and then also one on drop box ( free account gives you 2gb ) Not sure if it is available anymore but there was a plugin that would allow you to use your gmail as a storage area like drop box
LeMarchand Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I could list loads that are free and/or Open Source (many listed above) that the staff never use because the school/LEA hasn't sent them on a day out/training day about. The only ones I've seen in regular use are The Hat and Cool Timer. I wish someone would show interest in the lovely Stellarium. I have seen a child using Timez Attack (blocked by Websense!).
