klawd Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Would advise you to be careful if using Acronis. I used it to resize a partition on a domain controller. Which was a very bad move. It resized it quite happily, but the server would then BSOD, giving a critical Active Directory error. After a rather scary hour, I realised the problem was due to one of the resized partitions (that had AD on) being marked inactive. I had to restart using the Acronis CD, this then let me make the partition active. I restarted the server, it started to boot again, but windows complained AD was corrupted and stopped at a BSOD. I rebooted again, the server eventually got into windows and started to rebuild the AD, it took forever, then it dropped back to the login screen, I was able to login, then had to reset the drive letters (it had made the previous D partition, E ) and it was back to normal. There are lots of Acronis horror stories out there. So make sure you have sufficient backups before playing around. I did, but I did not want the mess of having to smash&rebuild a domain controller if I didnt absolutely have to.
somabc Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Are you from the past? (2007 called it wants its thread back )
yabbadabba Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 In this situation I would find a spare drive. Ghost what you have onto the spare drive. Ghost an image any where you can as an extra backup. Slap spare drive into the server and check it all works. If the ghost image works ok remove the backup and place in a safe place. Use something like Partition magic on the original drive. If it works, woohoo, if not you can use the ghost image/drive to get up and running and think of another plan of action. Partition magic was given away for free a few years ago with one of PC magazines, not sure if that helps or not
somabc Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Forget Acronis / Partition Magic Use PartedMagic - Parted Magic - Using G Parted
contink Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Forget Acronis / Partition Magic Use PartedMagic - Parted Magic - Using G Parted ... and does it handle RAID controllers?

Partition magic was given away for free a few years ago with one of PC magazines, not sure if that helps or not I did exactly that but using Ghost Solution Suite 2.0. The server has hot-swap scsi drives so I simply ghosted an image to another drive, swapped the two drives and restored the image. During the process it asks if you want to change partition sizes. Now, if I'm doing anything major on the server, I repeat the exercise and work on the new drive. If it goes pear-shaped or I run out of time, I just stick the first drive back in.
timbo343 Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 We have used something called Part-logic (free of course) to re-partition a drive which has no effect on the C. You can also, resize drives with this tool. But it does only work on the basis of cylinders and sectors. Tim
somabc Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 ... and does it handle RAID controllers? Yes it does YMMV
jmcdermott Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Jumping in a bit late and not shure if it has been mentioned but: If you convert the disks to dynamic disks you can simply add more space to the c: partition. Free Easy no software required, the way i like it.
CHR1S Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 *Cough* Hirens Boot CD *Cough* ................ *hides*
JJonas Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Acronis killed one of our servers. Im surprised nobody has mentioned windirstat to find out what is taking up all the space.

Similarly, I use Spacemonger to keep an eye on what's taking space up on drives. (much of a muchness, but I like the look of Spacemonger) Spacemonger 1.4 is free also, I think. Chunks

Edu-IT Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 .Delete $NTServicePackUninstall...$ folders from C:\WINDOWS - If you do this you will not be able to unintsall service pack. Delete $NTUninstallKb....$ folders from C:\WINDOWS - If you do this you will not be able to uninstall hotfixes. Is it 'safe' to remove these? Would it work if I backed them up to somewhere else and then deleted them? Or would that not work?
DSapseid Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Is it 'safe' to remove these? Would it work if I backed them up to somewhere else and then deleted them? Or would that not work? Ive deleted these files for a while now as on some machines it has been 2gb+ its fine, just make sure you leave the $hfmig folder - cant remember why, just saw it somewhere!! Done it on servers, desktops, laptops the lot and not 1 problem.
