I been asked to look in to the possibility of movinf some or all users over to virtual desktops, with the aim of reducing cost, setup, deployments etc.. Many Thanks Eric
bio Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Yes we started using Wyse WSM for some months now. we run 2 physical servers that can support 140 workstations (if 2 both servers keep running). but for redundancy we have 70 now. Untill now we have good experience with this solution. Its great for educational purposes. bio..

Bear in mind that they use a lot less electricity than a full fat PC. eg. 14.1W for an average device, it adds up to a lot of cash savings that way...

You can get them from as little as£180 for good HDX compatibility as well

featured_spectre Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Wyse would be the people of choice if we went thin client. Saw what they can do, and I was rather impressed by it, but the cost was the deciding factor that we could not go for them.

Has anyone tried Xen, KVM or any other free / open source virtualisation solution for desktop virtualisation? As far as I can make out, what paid-for solutions offer over the free ones are: - Support for hardware graphics acceleration / client-side usage of graphics hardware - Memory over-commit (or similar techniques) that allow you to squeeze more VMs on to a server, making better use of RAM - Template-based / read-only VM images (which I consider unimportant as deployment of desktop OSes, virtual or physical, is a solved problem and disk storage is cheap) Is that correct - are the above features only available in paid-for VM solutions? -- David Hicks

I would add my support for Axel terminals. We don't have a huge number on the go, but we'd originally looked at several different terminals, including Wyse, and decided the Axel M80 was a great little box. Easy to set up, small size, good performance, and inexpensive at around the £150 mark. Also came supplied with a standard mounting bracket to attach it to the back of an LCD monitor. Axel themselves provided us with good support too.

View 4.5 has a great option of offline working too, not sure if that would be of use. The PCoIP protocol enables you to delivery good HD to the desktop, and the pricing structure for schools is very attractive.

Great for everyday use , not great for lots of Media or high graphics stuff in Art and DT. Hugh power saving. By the time its all in place 22 servers and 170 desktops will be on 3 physical boxes with a San for the images to sit on 2

I presume you have this box dedicated to virtual desktop hosting.
imiddleton25 Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 we have a Dell R710with 74Gb Ram in and Nehalem quad-core Cpu. new servers have 2 x R810 with 104Gb and 8-core Xeon X7560 coming to share the load using xenserver and will load balence desktops and servers accross the lot 2
Geeksme Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I was speaking to the IT guy at the school my son goes to, they had a demo of both N-Computing and SoftXpand. They went for the SoftXpand solution as each workstation was directly connected to the onboard graphics cards giving a much better graphics performance.

Soulfish Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 We're using XenDesktop and Wyse Xenith clients here. Around 100 desktops so far with plans to scale that in the next year or two. Working really well so far. We only paid around £200/unit for the Wyse Xenith, and that was with a premium because it was a new unit in high demand because of it being a "zero client" for XenDesktop. The Wyse C10 was around £170ish 1
