Bored and out of Curiosity - What sort of Network do you have at home ?

 

My network consists of -

 

Nortel Baystack 450-24T Switch

Cisco 2621XM Router (Gateway)(DHCP)

8MB T-Mobile Mobile Broadband

Cisco Aironet 1200 Wireless Access Point

1x Windows 2000 Advanced Server for AD,DNS

1x Custom Built DG/Squid Proxy Server

 

I'm currently providing Wired & Wireless Internet Access for my street as a lot of people in my street dont have net access and dont want/need a land line as some of them actually work away alot.

 

So what does everyone else run ?

I used to have a few servers and a smoothwall. But i got rid.

 

Now i have just one box with 4tb of storage.

My Proxy Server (for when my daughter surfs...even at 17 months old, she knows how to get to BBC iPlayer with in the night garden due to a link on her desktop)

Also have BT Home hub, and Virgin Media Broadband, both running, both set up to run different IP Ranges. I have my switch set up so that my xbox takes virgin connection only, unless I plug in another port. Also I have written scripts for each PC, so that they are by default on BT Home hub for general surfing, but if a game is loaded up (EG MW2 or BFBC2, the IP Config changes on the PC and routes to the virgin router...and if Outlook/Internet etc is opened up, the IP Config changes to the BT Home hub.

 

A nice setup I have to be honest and it works flawlessly.

Haven't got the money at the min but a lot of stuff that I would like to do / get / implement at home etc

 

Currently just an al cheapo netgear router , my 2008 early mac pro and some network cabling.

 

Would like to

 

As above get a reasonable switch ( HP Pro Curve or similiar ) and a cisco router and do some reasonable cabling with a small 12 or 24 port patch panel and trunking and get or build a NAS

 

Would also be good to get a cisco aironet to see how to configure those correctly and also build a 2003 server in a VM when I get more RAM for my mac pro

 

Dieing to get a 200Gb OWC SSD Mercury Pro RE or at least the Pro edition.

Lets see I have a) a router that Virgin gave to me b) an Apple Airport Extreme and c) a laptop.

Seriously I have enough of it at work to come home and start building networks

Much rather do some cooking or get out and do some gardening.

I don't like to think of it as "running a network at home", because I get enough networking at work, but I have a fairly extensive set of gear to support the things I like to do.

- I've got a netgear something-or-other router connected to a NTL modem

- 3 Tb NAS to hold backups of music and video content from my media centre

- desktop PC

- xbox 360

- MacBook Pro

- Mac Mini (the media centre).

I have just a 2 year old PC, still on windows XP (well if it ain't broke, no need to change it) which has some componants dating back 5 years or more (DVD writer and 2 hard drives still going strong) 750GB external drive (almost full) which houses all my data. My 17" Phillips TFT was brought by me in 2003 and is still going strong. I also have a very old laptop which I ocassionally use.

 

I used to have all sorts of bits and pieces setup at one time, but I just got bored with it all and applied the KISS principle to my home computer use - plus servers use a surprising amount of electricity so they had to go really.

2TB Gentoo Server hosting DNS/DHCP/FTP/VPN/Proxy (so I can get iPlayer) and running 2008R2 in Virtualbox hosting Exchange 2010

Dreambox

3* slingboxes connected to sky+, dreambox, and regular sky

2 More DG834GT and another netgear thing dotted around for more wifi (big house)

Cat5e @ gigabit cabling throughout and connected via a 24 port GB linksys switch

2* Netgear Eva8000 media players

 

The Servers/Switch are on an APC 1500 and the modem and one of the slingboxes are on a smaller UPS.

I currently have:

 

1x Server (Windows 2003 running the usual AD, DNS, DHCP etc) with 2TB of storage space. On this storage space is all my content such as Films, Tv Eps, Documents and Music. The drives are using Raid1...just in case.

1x Gaming rig, dual booted to have one OS on my domain, and one stripped down "gaming edition" of XP for gaming

1x Laptop in the living room, not on the domain, connecting using wireless

1x Media Centre, which connects to my server using Home Plugs to stream the content to my TV

This is all connected together using a Netgear DG834G router...which hasn't missed a beat in 6 years.

 

I quite often connect to my server using logmein to do testing while i'm at work etc (or to fire off torrent downloads.....)

In all honesty, 99% of what i know has been learnt using my various different systems at home over the years. This all started off with two crappy computers running 95 and 98 back in the day, which i managed to get "networked" together (about 10 years ago lol), then, the system evolved when wireless came about, then i put in a 2000 server...which i successfully wrecked most weekends. Then, as my skills became very stable, i did a fresh build of 2003. I have once had 2008 server on at home, but, in all honesty, i didnt like it.

not to hijack this thread - just curious are there any good CBT nugget type video tutorials to go through the server side of things ref DNS, DHCP, GPO, ADUC, FSMO roles, NATing etc etc etc and how to setup most of them ie DNS etc - yes I still need books so any suggestions are welcome either via post or pm - pm maybe better as I don't want to hijack the thread.
