Curriculum Vitae - Any good advice?

just fired up word on mac os x ( on my power book obviously ) and it dont have no template for a CV

 

Flippin' 'eck ... there is on mine ... in pages and word.

 

There are plenty of templates availale for word and pages out there ... have a look for the different iWorks mailing lists / forums out there to get some better ones.

@ Tony I went through all the templates in word and it didnt have any CV ones, found a ton of other ones and yes I know I can search the web for other templates but gonna leave it for now as I already have one but I just basically needed to udpate my cv as it hasnt been touched for a long time and I wanted some idea of what sorts of things I could put in or take out etc etc.

Techrepublic have some good examples ... and there are lots of job sites out there that will stick the text boxes you fill in into some semblance of a decent CV.

CVs- there's a ton on the internet if you search; templates can be had by simply opening up Word or Pages if you are a Mac user.

I was recently seeking my first IT post, and after looking at various CV wizards and templates, I ended up going for a professional solution. A small private company called Virtual Clerical - http://www.virtualclerical.co.uk

 

Obviously I lacked experience, but they did a good job of elaborating on my skills, and were not as expensive as you'd think. I recommend using them.

Wow, good time for a thread resurrection.

I'm looking to move out of education hopefully, or at least to a better paid position in education doing the same NM job.

I've submitted my CV to lots of online job agencies (Monster, Reeds etc) and was wondering if any CV templates got posted any where?

I've had one interview already which I missed by the skin of my teeth (it went internal) but me and the missus are looking at starting a family now and I want to present the best CV I can. I've been doing this for six years and five years in an independent computer shop supplying to business and public.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Defintely worth dropping "virtualclerical" an email to discuss your requirements. I had a new CV done from scratch, but I seem to remember them telling me that they can look over an existing one and offer advice on it.

 

Wouldn't have thought it would be too expensive to do that.

Or..you can send your CV to me and I will have a look - I used to be an electronics/computer headhunter and I have lots of experience in writing CVs and have even done courses! There are many ways to do it but I can certainly give you a few tips

What do IT CVs look like these days??

 

Mine is based on a format that I used from 1999 and the content was last updated in 2007, but I am worried that it will just look dated these days.

 

Basic, nothing fancy. Personal details, work history, educaton and personal interests.

 

Not sure if I should be looking for a new job yet, but pre-empting it!

Just updated my CV from an old 2002 draft, it hadn't been updated in that long but I figure it's one of those jobs that I'd been putting off - now it's time to get it done.

 

If the offer by Witch is still open to take a quick peek at CV's I'd really like some feedback (good or bad) on mine. I won't send it or paste it unless it's okay to do so

I know this thread is about CV's, but most of the IT jobs i've applied for in the past, the emphasis

has been on the application form.

 

Is there not a danger that people focus so much attention on the layout of CV's that they fail to apply such planning and thought to the 'Information in support of your application' page on app forms where you have to reference your experiences and abilities with the person spec [you did read the person spec, right ?] to convince the person scan reading your form that you not a timewaste as far as an interview invite is concerned.

 

I'm guessing most of the jobs edugeekers apply for at this end of the ICT scale are focused on application forms, certainly jobs advertised by public bodies ???
