you could always leave your RBC and get an SLA with 99.9%.

In a rural area? For the same or less spend? Without the Harnessing Technology grant (topsliced per agreement with all heads in Somerset). No chance...

Because 'the cloud' in education is many years off. Internet connectivity in schools is in no shape to move to cloud reliance. 1 lesson of lost ICT connectivity can mean the loss of an entire section of the curriculum in some subjects. That's time you can't get back.

I agree about TCO as the driver. Which is one of the reasons I chose Ruckus. The TCO is good and low.

i use aerohives hive manager which is cloud based, but unlike any other solution its not a controller just a central management software allowing you to see the performance of the network and ap's......

one tip i would say- get way from your controllers there old out dated and serves a purpose that no longer is needed, do it at the edge.... you wouldnt have a bouncer in the middle of a night club stoppping people coming in would you, there on the doors at the edge!!! Aerohives honestly works exceptionally check it out

Considering controllers only really matured as a technology in the last 5 years IMO, they are certainly not out dated!

The idea of outsourcing your central infrastructure is way out there in my mind.

This isn't strictly true, most of the controllers provide VLANS for the access points. In conjunction with firewalls they are the bouncers between the outside wireless network and the internal infrastructure.

HP's wireless is NO good I have it it not reliable!!!!! Management is rubbish unless you buy procure manager. In eduction Ruckus is like going for an HP network rather than a Cisco you get the performance at 40% less cost.

Guys - A whole load of exchanges now offer ethernet (10 / 100) conecticity via fibre and copper connections so cost of bandwidth is no longer a barrier to cloud adoption. Companies like Opal, NTL Expo E and Global Crossing all provide 100mb internet at amazing costs - From our side all of the spending reviews have allowed us to look outside and its amazing what you can get for 8/10k

You are in London. Not everyone is. A 10Mbit fibre was quoted to us as £12.5kpa by BT recently (the only people capable of providing in our area). 30Mbits went up to £17.5kpa. For a school with 600 kids, there is no way we can afford that cost.

Joking aside, underpowered?

compared to the likes of some of the big players , extricom ect, but there pricing is well above most peoples budgets.

pound for pound Ruckus is the most cost effective solution that WORKS lol

I have a 3Com Campus wide managed network with 60 access points and have had a Xirrus array for "guest/mobile" student access in the main foyer area. It's will cost me considerably less to replace than I originally paid to replace all my 3Com kit with Xirrus arrays and I will need 10 arrays rather than 60 AP's. From what I have seen here and in higher education I personally wouldn't describer their kit and underpowered, the opposite if anything.

Meraki is significantly more feature rich and less expensive than Ruckus. Don't believe these so called neutral posts. Ruckus seem to focus on bad mouthing the competition at every opportunity rather than selling on their features. Cheap, whoopy do, clever antenna, wow! Test Meraki against any of them and you'll never look back.

Erm... Your first post stated

The cost of the license from Meraki can be expensive if you are looking to deploy to a single site but I have heard they are up for a deal if this is the case.

It is quite obvious that you work for Meraki, but as yet you have not provided any evidence other than to slate the competition... Something you say they do, but without any substantiation. I suggest you practice what you preach and stick to providing evidence as to how Meraki is a better system than the others.

Also, 'feature rich' is in the eye of the beholder. Many features provided on managed wireless systems are extraneous to a school's needs.

Finally, why on Earth would any organisation wish to put core infrastructure in the cloud? Boggles the mind.

Can't see that study without signing up, which I have no inclination to do. I don't see how Gartner can be considered an unbiased source though, considering they are paid for analysts who don't reveal who paid them.

Thought I’d also add this little comparison sheet and a few extra notes:

• Less granular control and flexibility when using cloud based controller

• Connectivity is an issue and internet connection fails (even if using wireless for local applications)

• Wi-Fi is off the shelf and not optimised like Ruckus

• No re-occurring costs apart from annual support contract

For @StuartWhite or @Net-Ctrl...

The link above is 404 and I would be *very* interested to see that PDF if it still exists please??

The comparison sheet I can find is from October 2012, so it will be a little out of date. If you would still like it I can send it on a DM to you. This acts as a comparison document rather than one that picks fault at Meraki, which is something we wouldn't want to be seen to do. I think it is fair to say that most wireless manufacturers have their area of expertise and it is more about choosing the right solution that meets your needs and demands.
