Adding username to printout

I know this has been mentioned before but the threads are a least a year old so was wondering if there had been any advancement of being able to add usernames to printouts? I want to name and shame.

Tell me about it .. here the staff print out .. then leave it a few hours to get their work .. can't find it (or can't be bothered to) in the pile of stuff so then just print it again ..

 

Going to a secured print setting soon with out new MultiFunction .. and I'm trialing PaperCut Print Management at the moment, which is fairly cost effective looking at it, which then means I make use of a little shelf and old computer with a print release station on it by each printer so they can print, but then have to log in to print out their work .. it's a rather nifty feature and means they don't just print and it gets wasted .. so that's another option for you ..

They also do a free product which just logs printer usage. Might be handy for catching out people who take print the same thing many times.

 

Another trick is if you have some internet logging in place, look at the URL ie prints on the bottom of the page. If only one person has looked at that page you'll know who's printed it.

Just on a tangent I send out a registry key on logon that makes the printers default to non colour printing ... it doesnt name and shame but saves on colour toner ...

We have an MSI here that adds the username to a print out from the internet. Only does it for internet though, not for Word/PowerPoint etc etc

Just found that in the advanced section of PaperCut, they are trialing a WaterMarking system which does what you're looking for. You can add a watermark (default of Printed by %user% at %date%) and then choose a gray level, font size and placement and it will print it on every page ..

 

Looks like there are some other options cropping up too, but the PaperCut would allow you to have lots of managing and charging abilities for departments too if you really wanted.

The latest version of papercut includes a new feature to add a discrete watermark to printouts - you can use their scripting engine to specify what this data is (including username). See here for info on their 10.5 release which includes watermarking. I plan to update to this soon.

I believe the package is free to be distributed, but unfortunately I can't offer any assistance in the setup as it was configured here before my time.

 

There is a read me included though that offers some decent instructions, as well as the original author details.

But they do offer a 40-day free trial so you can see if it will do what you want .. which is great! (what I'm currently running to gather what I hope will be enough evidence to get the SLT to buy it!)

As already mentioned watermarking is a new feature well worth checking out, plus if you have a new MFD you should know papercut (and other software) can probably monitor the copying/faxing/scanning on that MFD as well.

 

I know some sites use a seperate page that prints the username on but thats just a waste of paper and doesnt really help the problem.

 

Some printers used to have this option built into the drivers, i think canon often did this.

We use a PCL separator page between each print.

Yeah it uses an extra sheet of paper for each print but in the public areas it has saved us so much hassle!

Because our students are visually impaired we have bumped up the font size for their username so they can read it and it throws the date and time on there too so you know when they printed it and how long it's been sitting there!

Also you don't need the separator page on every printer, so our staff printers which are hardly used don't need it.

This is correct at current time (Nov 2010), however we've just finished PCL5 and this will be included in the 10.7 release which is scheduled for next week! Peter has also started working on PCL6 watermarking. PCL6 is a binary language and a bit nasty to work with but even so Peter has got the proof of concept code working today.

 

Once we have Postscript, PCL5 and PCL6 we'll have pretty much all the major printer types covered.

 

We'll announce the 10.7 release here: PaperCut Releases (and of course also on the twitter feed )

Watermarking was the number two voted for feature from education sites this year so we're working pretty hard to knock it off. Then we can get on to the next hot item - bring print quotas to iPad printing....

I was just contemplating the old argument of PaperCut vs Print Manager plus that I've seen on here a number of times and trying to work out, given that I already know you had the PostScript version working, whether to jump ship from the Print Manager Plus that we already have.

 

Given your closing in on getting PCL 6 wartermarking working and according to an E-mail I received from PMP asking if they were looking into something similar "We currently have no plans to implement this feature in the next version" it's a real temptation...
