tech_guy Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I plugged my phone in to charge it up this morning as I'd forgotten to do it last night. Am I alone it feeling just a little bit guilty in doing this as isn't it technically theft of electricity from your employer?

korifugi Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I, much like the rest of my department often plug our phones in... If you need to be contacted quickly - do they ring your mobile? If so, theres your reason...
Hightower Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Isn't working through your lunch hour technically theft of your time? Yet I bet your employer wouldn't bat an eyelid if it happened.
machin05 Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Me thinks you're lucky not to have more pressing concerns!
tech_guy Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 Me thinks you're lucky not to have more pressing concerns! I have plenty of those, I assure you!
jamesfed Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I don't usaly have a need to charge my phone at work but then again there shouldn't be a problem considering I'm using a PC that I paied for and built myself

Sirbendy Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I've thought long and hard about this, and I reached the following conclusion... bu&&er it. My iPaq is currently plugged into the USB port, charging merrily. It's never really occured to me - technically, a USB pen also uses electricity - does that mean I'm thieving from my employer when I plug it in?
jamesfed Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I'm speechless - seriously?! Seriously seriously - when I started the best we had was a Intel Atom PC so by the end of week 1 I brought in my testing PC from home
Hightower Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Ooooooh Noooooooooooooooooo........ooooooooooooooo! I just accidentally clicked on a BBC link that was completely unrelated to work, and the head phoned up asking me to return that bit of internet I stole. 1
Hightower Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Seriously seriously - when I started the best we had was a Intel Atom PC so by the end of week 1 I brought in my testing PC from home Oh, and that just silly. They should have just said "trousers down, bend over the table, it's time for a spanking boy" when you started.
K.C.Leblanc Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I off set it by charging my Netbook at home.

Gotta wonder how the guy before me did with it But its no real problem to me - at least I know I'm using something that will work well reguardless
Hightower Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Gotta wonder how the guy before me did with it But its no real problem to me - at least I know I'm using something that will work well reguardless Yes, but surely it's like them saying "jamesfed, we're a bit tight up this month, and we can only afford to pay all but 1 member of staff. that 1 member of staff is you james" with a prompt reply of "thats fine by me"
jamesfed Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Yes, but surely it's like them saying "jamesfed, we're a bit tight up this month, and we can only afford to pay all but 1 member of staff. that 1 member of staff is you james" with a prompt reply of "thats fine by me" Arn't I nice (and ever so slightly foolish)
sidewinder Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 lol..that is one thing I dont feel the slightest bit guilty about Aside from the fact I do use it for work, I'd charge it anyway, I doubt any teachers feel guilty about it! Will also charge my ipod, laptop, camera, whatever I need
ICT_GUY Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 No regrets, well one but that was a long time ago and it best not to dwell on the past.
tech_guy Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 Yes but we all do it or similar don't we. I've got my own laptop here that I'm using, along with countless tools and memory sticks and everything else that we bring in from home or buy with our own money to make our working lives easier. I'm even sat here writing with my own pen because the place buys crappy ones that leak ink all over.
timzim Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I washed my hands at work this morning. Isn't that technically theft of the school's water? Oh, and I breathed as well - isn't that theft of the school's oxygen? And I walked on the school's lino and wore a tiny fraction of it away...isn't that theft of lino too? Get a grip good people... 1
rad Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 As for people bringing in their own kettles, radios, etc, I am sure 0.00003 amps (ok sarcastic) is not going to hurt the electricity bill.
Hightower Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 isn't that theft of lino too? Lino? Lino as in the thing that used to be popular in the 80's in peoples kitchens?!
Haptic Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Although I commend your conscientiousness I'm sure they wouldn't mind. As an employer I wouldn't care if someone brought their dirty plates to throw in the dishwasher...as long as the work was being done. (that invite is open to staff only....before anyone close by gets the wrong idea!) Joe
timzim Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Lino? Lino as in the thing that used to be popular in the 80's in peoples kitchens?! Our school's held together with it - remove the lino and the school would fall down.
