Death of Laptop

Hi people just had a laptop brought to me, and it is not switching on no power what so ever tested the power cable on a different laptop and it works fine, so the cable is fine, now realized that a bit of water was dropped on the key board what could be the possible problem? Please Help

You could also try swapping the batteries between laptops to see if that is the issue.

 

It would be best to let the laptop dry completely before trying to turn it on again though, obviously water does not make laptops very happy bunnies.

How old is tha laptop (and make\model)? I've seen BIOS batteries causing problems in the past, so if you can get to that then it may be a pointer. Also the power button may be at fault possibly?

Charge up the battery in an identical laptop (or pinch a charged battery from another one) and try turning on without the power supply attached. If it works without the PSU but with a charged battery, they've probably snapped the connection pin on the motherboard, or the whole unit has broken lose from its solder points.

Doesn't answer the age question. Can you pull the battery out all together and just run it using the AC adapter? If water was near it, and the laptop was turned on at the time I'm guessing something has fried on the board. Not going to be the cheapest/easiest to fix IMO.

its about an year old yeap took the battrey out and tried with the ac adaptor but still no luck no lights, what could have fried???? is there a way of finding out?

Have you got another laptop of same model? If so, I would try all the components on that one (i.e. HDD, memory, etc etc), and if all those work in the 'good' laptop then it looks like something has shorted on the motherboard. If this is the case then you'll need a new board to get it working, which may be tricky for a laptop.

 

It's a tricky one to diagnose fully as if it won't even turn on then you can't run a PC checking software solution on it. We had an A300 fail in the same way some months back. Didn't even waste the time diagnosing it, and instead chucked it in the drawer for spares. To be honest, it's been more use that way as we've already had the screen, HDD, keyboard, and memory salvaged for other A300's we had.

I would strip the laptop apart and check the motherboard, but I suspect the motherboard has been fried as the water will have leaked through. It could be the keyboard have you tried disconnecting this to see if the laptop will turn on with the keyboard attached.
