Following the SIMS summer upgrade (to version 7.132) a new feature "Emergency Alerts" has been added. This allows staff to send a system generated alert to selected staff by pressing a button in SIMS, when they are in need of staff support. Currently our reception staff are receiving the alerts, which come in the form of an on screen pop up and an audio alert. The audio alert is not very loud though and doesnt come from connected speakers but from the speaker soldered onto the motherboard. This is the same speaker which reports BIOS POST errors.

Is there anyway to re-route the sound to an external speaker to make the alerts louder?

I smell a Change Request (CR) brewing.

Only thing I can think of is in Sound and Audio Devices > Sounds tab, then seeing if it uses one of the default windows sounds

Our SIMS here uses the motherboard 'speaker' or beeper to play the 'You have a new message' alert beeps. I think it must be a 'feature' of SIMS that it uses that audio system rather than the actual Windows/Soundcard interfaces.

What kind of workstations are you using?

Tools -> Setups -> Emergency alerts

After it's enabled close SIMS go back in and you hould get a new icon (envelope with a life ring) at the top of the screen.

Where is this button? I want to play! ;-)

Send a member of staff a high priority message. It beeps very loudly and pops up a message on receipt then everytime they log in until they read it. For extra fun you can play keepy-up with the little pop-up window by dragging it up the screen as it tries to go down and disappear off the bottom. :D
