EduTech Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Afternoon, Just In Case anyone is using NOD 32 for there Anti-Virus and have noticed there systems crashing since the virus definition today, it is to do with something that is contained within that release. ESET are working to fix this in tomorrow update but if it does occur a HARD REBOOT will fix the problem. It appears to only be affecting WindowsXP and Server 2003 Operating Systems. James. 2
EduTech Posted September 2, 2010 Author Posted September 2, 2010 UPDATE: ESET have released a Fix but it still breaks it! Virus Definition 5419 ESET have recommended to turn off the updates for the time being. James.
leco Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Thanks for the heads up, will be implementing the No Updates immediately.
mikeglover Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Thanks for the heads up. So far had no issues with ESET today (touch wood)
leco Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I've changed the setting to Ask before update but the 2003 server already has 5419:( Will have to see in the morning if anything has happened to it.
gaz350 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Would explain a few things yesterday. Thanks for heads up
SirPalmeirao Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 This morning I have all my servers down because of this stupid anti-virus. Is there any solution yet?
EduTech Posted September 3, 2010 Author Posted September 3, 2010 At the moment all that we have been told is to Hard Reboot the Computer/Server (hold power button down) LOL god knows why they said do it that way. and then power it back on and everything should be okay but to be honest my computer still crashed for a second time after that. I'll be contacting them again this morning to see if they have any update, but they have not released another one as of yet James.
EduTech Posted September 3, 2010 Author Posted September 3, 2010 UPDATE: If after you have given your system a hard reboot the system still continues to behave, I have attached a tool which will restart the NOD Process which you can run. I have attached it to this message, James.eset_update_fix.zip 1
Dave84 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Its affecting Windows 7 too. I had several PCs freeze up yesterday afternoon and checking task manager ekrn.exe was using 100% cpu at the time of the lock up.
EduTech Posted September 3, 2010 Author Posted September 3, 2010 Yeah Windows 7 Is what we run here and it has happened. James.

If we reboot twice the computer it works.

Guest salan Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 We have been 'ground to a halt' by this. Just changed this summer from Sophos to Eset !! Ho hum!
leco Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 We have been 'ground to a halt' by this. Just changed this summer from Sophos to Eset !! Ho hum! Stay with it Eset is not normally like this, honest. For my own installation - all stations are "freezing" at differing times. The 2003 server was showing a power out message when I arrived this morning. So am guessing that it re-booted at some point. Haven't had time to check the version numbers. I do hope they get it sorted soon. Might try EduTech's file over the weekend if it continues.
OutToLunch Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Haven't had time to check the version numbers. I do hope they get it sorted soon. Might try EduTech's file over the weekend if it continues. Had major issues here this morning with copies that had grabbed 5418 then played up so much they couldn't get to 5419. Fingers crossed it's settling now - the file linked in the thread is (I assume) the same tool offered by Eset in their knowledgebase if you want to get it from an official source. ESET Knowledgebase - Virus Signature Database Update 5418 may cause an "ekrn.exe" error or other issues 1

leco Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Maybe I'd better remote in and see what's happening (I finally got an afternoon off - first one since the summer term - nice one Eset)
leco Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Versions are now 5420 on all my servers, seems to have settled on that. No major issues as far as I can see/tell from a remote session. 1
