[ms office - 2003] Word 2003 - hanging for 5 seconds

We are having a weird issue with Word 2003 on a single workstation. Whenever word is opened, or alt tab'd to, or a new/existing document opened, it takes up to 5 seconds for Word to become active.

 

Its as if its waiting for something, then timing out.

 

I cant really think of what it might be.. Any suggestions what I could look for?

I would say one of two things I can think of off the top of my head

 

1. Delete the default.dot ( default template for word from at least the users profile that it effects, if not find all of them and delete all of them) re launch and test - word should re create the default template

 

2. Delete the local profile and get said user to log back in ( obviously depending on what type of profiles you use. Might be worth using delprof or the likes to remove them all from that one work station

 

3. As a very last resort maybe re image said work station and try again - I would also ensure all drivers ( chipset / sata / NIC , etc ) are all up to date.

Another thing that can slow down Office apps is the recently used files list. If an entry is for a file that is no longer accessible, Office pauses while it tries to find.

Also do they have a printer local to them for example as printers can cause all sorts to go wrong in word.

It could be worth looking to see if your AV is set to scan "on open" on that particular machine, might be the cause!

Is it looking for the default printer, which isn't online? Excel 2003 does this when it can't find the default printer.

This is one of the head-honcho's workstations, so reimaging it or deleting his (local) profile is not an option.

I've seen Word lag when it thinks there is still a shared or mapped drive that no longer is there or can't be reached.
