Brand new XP won't shutdown!

I'm in one of my schools setting up some netbooks and a new teacher laptop.

 

Stuck the XP "downgrade" disc in - got it into XP - ran my WPKG installer to add in Office etc- machine won't shut down (just sits there saying it shutting down) unless hoild power off button.

 

I re-booted it - shut it down again and went home yesterday just to make sure I was giving it enough time - back in today - still says shutting down.

 

 

Don't you just love computers - they'll always through a spanner at you to keep you on your toes!

So I decided to re-do the XP install and just try re-booting without installing anything - same result

So - do I spend loads of time on it or just tell the techer to hold the power button for 10 secs when they want to switch off

On a serious note I've had this with some new motherboards of late not shutting down XP properly, a bit of a fiddle with power settings in the BIOS (turning them off to simple mode / don't save energy, don't be green etc) seemed to make it everntually shut down but it does take longer to shut down than a much older PC but it shuts down which must be the key thing.

There doesn't seem to be any power options in the BIOS

Tried setting drive to IDE mode - no differenence

 

I'm going to take it home and see if I can get any driver updates at my leisure.

 

At least I've got a new trolley full of netbooks done so there is soime job satisfaction
