Net Support manager

Could anyone one who uses Net Support Manager and Net Support School please share their experinces with me as I need to change from NetOp School and would also like to purchase the Net Support Manager software to assist with remote management etc of network, any positives or negatives (known issues) are welcome, thanks.

NSM Is a joy to use. I've been using it for over 6 years now and it provides such a valuble range of tools (+Net Support School for free!) that mnay previously tedious tasks are now done in very little time at all. I would highly recommend it.

We have NetSupport School Pro here, obviously doesn't have the bells and whistles of NSM, but a useful tool all the same. The one point I would highlight is that SchoolPro (I don't know if it applies to NSM) can be run from a pupil's pen drive, if your security settings aren't correctly set (ahem).

Net Support Manager here with me and its amazing, as has been said its a huge time saver, very good product and I love it, couldn't be without it. Its the first thing that goes on every machine and every image, its that useful!

To start with we will be using SynchronEyes from Smart ... a nice program and gets staff used to ding things differently ... once we have proven it works well we will then look at products that do similar and with added extras ...

 

Start small and build on it ...

Thanks everyone for your input I was 99% sure that the product was great and you have confirmed that it is well worth the expense (should reduce time required moving round site) I just need to raise some extra cash, better get my begging face on and see if the bursar has any spare end of year cash.

If you are really good at begging try and go for NSM DNA. ABSOLUTLYBLOODYFANTASTICAL.

Yes. Download th etrail version and roll out 4 clients. The information (auditing, usage, internet monitoring etc) returned is awsome, and all wothout having numeorus products spread over all of your servers. It also does software rollouts

Ok stupid question inc. But where are you getting it from in the UK. I've been looking at this for ages because LanView which I use nw is just not safe to let teachers at and the idea of the classroom and Admin elements together in one package is just fantastic.

 

I looked in the reseller list and theres only Ireland there. And I'll say that what they quoted me makes me think you guys are getting it cheaper because no matter how good it is we can't afforde that

Yup, and on large networks that rollout can be done via warehouse deployment to keep net traffic down. Nice bit of kit DNA

All NetSupport products are available through NetSupport Software

 

AFAIK we are running a special offer at the moment where if you purchase NetSupport Manager (which comes with NetSupport School) you get NetSupport DNA Pack 1 for free. Pack 1 covers all inventory modules but doesn't include metering, distribution and alerting modules.

I'm the product manager for SMART's SynchronEyes, and as biased as John.

 

We're worth looking into as well- we won an award at BETT last month and just introduced some new security features. Steljes sells Sync in the UK.

 

I'm in between sales and the tech guys if you have any issues.

Everone says NSM is good but never give the reasons why.

 

In another thread there was some specific questions but no answer.

Now we have a NSM specific thread I'll try again. Does NSM do:

 

User account creation including email accounts, home drives etc?

Disk quotas?

Print quotas?

Automated Windows build deployment?

Application Software packing and deployment?

Centralised lock down setting?

Centralised logging of logons and activity?

 

From all accounts NSM/NSS does remote session control very well but what about all the other network admin stuff.

 

Would you let a newby tech (or even a teacher) use NSM?

I would let a teacher use NetSupport School as thats what its for. NSM is aimed, originally i would assume, at the Corperate environment where as its being aimed at schools now hence the school component being included.

 

As far as I know it doesnt do

User account, disk quotas, print quotas (but you could use NSM to connect to your server / workstation and do them directly on it)

But some of those appear to be in NS DNA I think (I dont use DNA so don't know for sure).

 

NS is a very talented Remote Desktop / Assistance tool, it has a should for help type feature, can remote script things, monitoring, testing, internet connection stuff, screen showing, teaching tool as well as from a techie point of view assistance tool.

Does NetSupport Manager use the Active Directory User/Password for authentication?

 

Has anyone else had problems getting the Wake-On-Lan facility to work correctly? Mine will work once right after the BIOS has been set to WOL and then it refuses to there-on.

Ive set it to only allow Domain Admins to connect to workstations so it asks me to authenticate and I assume talks nicely to AD and then it goes yup I am.

Where is the option to set that as I must be blind and can't find it.
