Little-Miss Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Sprint-BlackBerry-Curve-8530-Royale-Purple-smartphone.jpg But the purple is only available from 02. I am in a Vodafone contract... There is a refurbished one on Play.com...but how refurbished is refurbished?! I want a purple blackberry. How do i get one....discuss... Are Blackberrys as bad as everyone makes them out to be?
Domino Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 As I've said to you before, I wouldn't have one as a personal phone. Business phones they're great. the interface is horrible, given whats out there nowadays. Also their app provisioning is really lacklustre. I believe also to unlock them you'll need to install a new firmware - with all the joy that entails - could be wrong on that though. Their selling point used to be email support - what phone doesn't do that nowadays?
Domino Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Yet again, just my opinion there though. you might love them. I'd say if you know anyone who's got one go have a play - or see if there's one working in a phone shop. or play with a simulator BlackBerry - Smartphone Simulators What i'll say though is look through the maze of settings screens and you'll see what I mean. I have a fair few mates who've got them as they're 'the in thing' and regretted it once they've seen the latest iphone/android/etc device
Little-Miss Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 I just want a decent priced phone which i can use on my current voda contract. I just want a phone! All the other stuff is nice, but ive never found myself spending ages on there...
Little-Miss Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 reasonably priced! lol I could get a laptop for £400
Nick_Parker Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 On Friday, July 16th, Google confirmed that the Nexus One will be discontinued and that the company has received it’s final order of handsets from the phone maker HTC. So I wouldn't go that route...
teejay Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 What about one of these http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/htc-wildfire?WT.srch=1&cid=ppc-go I know it's not purple, but it's android for your inner geek and has had some very good reviews. 1
SYNACK Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Blackberrys do phone calls ok (depending on model the sound quality can be a bit rough), email well and central managment really well. Everything else is knid of a best effort affair. The phone hardware itself is good, sturdy and has quite reasonable battery life but alot of the features that make it compelling from a business standpoint like central lockdown, provisioning and configuration make no sense on a personal scale. As they are so configurable centrally using BES (don't get me started on my opinion of that software) and most were probably configured centrally by the corporation buying them rather than the user I think that the on device configuration is less friendly. Also given its targetet purpose of email the UI for anything but the standard workflow is less polished in my opinion. You also get stung extra (at least here) if you want to use any of the fancy email bits of the phone because you need a special plan. Overall they are good devices for what they do but as a personal all round device they are lacking when compared to some of the other players. It may suit fine depending on what you want to do with it but as suggested above the only way to know is to have a play with the device yourself. 1
teejay Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I had a blackberry before I got my HTC Desire. The blackberry was good, and for stuff like calls and texting was very easy to use, it had very good battery life and well built to handle knocks. What I didn't realise until I got my Desire is how poor the call quality was on it. I do miss not having to charge my phone for a week and the qwerty keyboard rather than the on screen virtual keyboard, but other than that the Desire blows it away, that's why I've recommended it's baby brother the Wildfire above.
SYNACK Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 (edited) If you were thinking of going with andriod how about one of these http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/htc-tattoo which you can get fully customized covers for from here HTC TATTOO No idea how much they cost there though. Little-Miss Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 Ok, i have to admit the HTC Wildfire is looking good..... Many of you recommend them?
teejay Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 HTC Wildfire Android smartphone ? reghardware Best bet, pop down to your local snake oil salesmen mobile phone shop and have a play. A friend of mine got one a couple of weeks ago and is very pleased with it and tbh apart from a slightly smaller screen it was virtually identical to the Desire use wise. It does have a slower processor than the Desire, but I didn't notice when fiddling with it. 1

flyinghaggis Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 (edited) Are Blackberrys as bad as everyone makes them out to be? In my experience yes ......! What about an Sony X10 Mini. Small, cute and available in purple/pink shade so it checks all the boxes. My g/f wants one Also runs Android and by all accounts is a pretty good phone. http://www.sonyinsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/SE_Xperia_X10_mini_PP07_Black_1.png Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini review from TechRadar UK's expert reviews of Mobile phones Not sure what you want to spend but it's about £200 unlocked and free on most contracts Edited July 26, 2010 by flyinghaggis 1
dayzd Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 What about an Sony X10 Mini. I know somebody who has the Pro version of one of these - the Pro version has a slideout qwerty keyboard, if you don't like touchscreens. I had a play with it before I got my HTC Desire and have to say it is a very capable little phone. Not so small that it is difficult to use and has a fantastic camera. And as mentioned, runs Android and runs it well, from what I saw 1
