Remove Libraries, Favourites and Network from explorer AND open file dialog

Hey all,

 

I'm trying to get remove all traces of these items from my Windows 7 machines.

 

Following excellent advice elsewhere on this forum, I have removed them from explorer, however they still appear on the left of the "open file" dialog in programs such as Office / OpenOffice etc.

 

Has anyone successfully removed these?

I'm onto this now, will update if I have any progress. I also get a handy browser for the entire network in my Open dialog. Great stuff.

Right, I've been on this for a bit. There's nothing in Group Policy, and the navigation bar in Office is entirely seperate from the Explorer one (which I've locked down with tweaks from here). Therefore, the students have a browser to go to any network share they like, etc etc. Obviously permissions stop any damage, but they can still see deep into the folder structures on the DCs etc. Has no one else come across this problem?

I'm looking into this too! Im sure one of us will crack it soon. Has anyone tried the Office specific ADMs you can download?

Yup, I've used the ADMs, now moved to ADMX. Nothing in there at all. You can restrict the Save As dialog, but not Open. It's dull - if you could just tell Office to use the common Explorer dialog it'd be something.

With the time I've already invested in this, I'd suspect it's in the realms of heavy registry editing to sort. It's obviously a huge oversight, and I think it probably applies to most people on here running Windows 7 - though they may have different settings to counter this.

 

Open Office doesn't do it

Found a way to do this in office with no need to edit registries. -

 

IN GP install the Office 2010 ADM/ADMX files and goto

 

User Config/ Administrative templates/ Microsoft Office 2010 / File Open/Save dialog box

 

In PLaces bar location add the users home drive and any shares they will be able to save to

In the Restriucted browsing folder , set activate restricted browsing to all the office programs you want

In the approved locations - add in where they can browse too.

 

You are then left with the left hand side places bar showing only the Places Bar location you set before.

There are a couple of reg keys that can handle this for you:

 

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\ShellFolder

change the Attributes value from the standard: A0900100 to: B090010D

 

this then changes the value for everything using the explorer shell there are other ones for network/libraries etc too.
