Removing RM Management

Hi

 

I have acquired a laptop from a local school and it is locked with RM logon screen. Naturally I just want to use it as a normal computer with XP which is installed on it.

 

Can anyone point me to how to deactivate this facility

 

The school never gave any logon username or password anyway.

 

I can get into Safe mode, but thats it...

Best bet here's a reinstall.

 

It's possible you could uninstall the RM Gina if you could get into the laptop itself and you'd be left with a vanilla logon screen but it would still be covered in RM stuff and probably some stuff licensed to the school you're not likely to be entitled to.

 

That's my opinion anyway, there comes a time when you have to start afresh

Yes, it's virtually impossible to remove all RM software once installed. Re-install Windows from scratch - you'll have a faster computer and one which you can use properly

(I know what you mean, you mean one which can be used away from an RM network)

Thats great - however, it would help if I had a new copy of XP !

 

Don't fancy shelling out £100 for another one......

As long as it has a licence key on the bottom you should be able to re-install it, you will just need the correct media to do so.

Yep, got a licence key on the bottom

 

I tried a Repair Reinstall with an XP Pro disk that I found - not sure where it came from - must have been a copy

 

When I got to the Key - it rejected the one that was on the bottom of the laptop

 

So I am still stuck !

You will need an OEM disk of XP Pro to use as the code on the bottom of it will only work with one of them.

At the risk of sounding cynical ... if the school has given / sold it to you then I would go back to the school ... ask for the original CDs / DVDs that came with it so you can install it from scratch.

 

The school should have completely wiped it before it was given to you because it may have been used by a teacher or a pupil and personal data could be left on it.

 

The fact that you have it in the condition it is naturally makes me suspicious that it wasn't meant to leave the school in the condition it has done ... but that is just my suspicious nature. Have you tried going back to the school for help? Have you tried contacting Rm for help? Have you tried going to a different school who has RM on their kit for help?

Just how exactly did you aquire this laptop?

 

Going on the principle that

1) The machine should of been wiped when it left the school

2) Your only posts have been about this laptop

3) You 'found' a copy of XP pro

 

It screams dodgy to me (sorry if I'm wrong... but it does)

We have handed laptops away before and never erased the contents of the computers before.

Why you ask?

1. Staff and pupils are not allowed to save to the hard disks of the computers.

2. Whoever takes the computers from us is expected to install their own copy of Windows onto the computer.

3. we dont have time to go erasing all the computers. Sorry fi that seems lazy but thats true.

1. So no profiles then? What about licensed programs? It's not just about Data Protection.. (not sure if anything of value could come from profiles but I prefer to be safe than sorry)

If we give away old laptops (and to be honest, once they get to the point we can't use them, they are only fit to be door stops) I install Ubunto on them. Minimal work involved, and no licencing issues to come back to the school.

We just use the 'boot nd nuke' copy of Eraser to frag our PCs hard drives - it takes 2mins of my time to boot and type 'autonuke' and then ~30-60mins to deep fry the data on the hard drive.
