Password Protect a folder in XP

Hi Folks,

 

We need to password protect a folder and all it's subfolders and contents.

 

For reasons of politics we cannot use a network share, TrueCrypt or password protected compressed files.

 

Does anyone know of any (and it has to be free!) software to do this?

Could you use NTFS permissions? This would allow you to set which groups can access the folder and subfolders.

I'm afraid NTFS permissons are also out for political reasons.

 

They need an interface where you enter a specific passwords. A perception thing I'm afraid!

You might find that this approach is not compliant with FMSiS - I'm afraid I am not an expert on it, but the few docs I have seen talk about sensible password security (not sharing passwords etc). NTFS really fits the bill for this . . . .

Problem with this is your not password protecting folders, your password protecting files. The main issue I see with this is that you can still see document titles / names. If you were doing this, for example, an HR folder then it wouldnt be appropriate as you would still see titles which could be "Mr. Smith Disciplinary" or something along those lines.

 

Ideally you'd want a system that password protects the folder when you try to open it, not the files.

Create a folder on some webspace. Upload the folder and files. Protect using htaccess.
