Why couldnt they have given them to people who cant afford to buy a car? Young people, people looking for work but with no transport, immigrants who would have normally got a grant... The govt. could then tax themand make some of the money back; road tax, petrol etc.

Didn't you ever see Soylent Green - when the greenhouse effect starts to properly take hold and over-crowded Britain starts sinking in to the North Sea, those cars will be hot residenitial property!

Have you mixed up your films?

 

No - in the film (and, if I remember, the book), an abandoned car stuck in permanent gridlock was consider decent, roomy accomodation. Unless I'm thinking of another post-apocalyptic story - Mad Max?

Strange how the landscape around us fades into history. A black wooden barn in the middle of a field near Tempsford in Bedforshire is all that reminded people that during WW2, brake resistance fighters were flown out in the dead of night into occupied France.

 

Kind of like the end of the film "12o'clock high!, "Saving Private Ryan" and the book "Goodbye Mickey Mouse", you could almost hear the ghost of the Westland Lysander as it slipped away into the night.
