HI

I am thinking about upgrading my browsers to IE8 when the exams have finished. I have installed it on one machine and it appears to work ok. I have taken the adm from the windows xp machine it was installed on and imported it into the home page group policy. I have set the extra settings like disable private browsing.

Now what do people advice me to do. Do I authorize the update on wsus for the client pcs or does anyone have any other things I need to do first or advice.

Thanks for all your help.:bowl:

You've got a choice I guess. I updated via WSUS and locked it down via GPO and it's worked fine for me. The only thing you need to watch are the Run Once settings (for the search settings and the like). I've managed to get most of my machine to behave and accept what I've told them, but there's the odd one that seems to slip the net.

I've not come across any issues doing it this way. If you're worried, then maybe only authorise it for one or two machines and see how they take it? If that works, authorise it for the rest.

If you're coming from IE7, many of the GPO settings will also lock IE8 down, not too much else to do. I rolled out IE8 a month or so after it was released, not had a single issue (touch wood).

IE8 runs fine on my main computer, my 2 laptops also. I have installed on other computers and it has run like a bag of crap. No problem though just un-install the upgrade and you will be back to your original install. Have fun :)

So long as you configure the new IE8 GPO settings first, then deploy IE8 using WSUS it should go pretty smooth. Windows still uses BITS to download to each workstation so users generally shouldn't notice.

There are many security and feature enhancements to IE8 and of course it's XP's last version of IE as Microsoft again force users to adopt Vista or Windows 7 for IE9.

I found IE8 to crash too much... anyone else experienced this?

Works well here (went from IE6 to IE8) but I had to make a couple of modifications to prevent the 20 second delay when logging in.

What modifications did you make?

I had to tweak add on management to disable an add-on regarding the roxio cd creator software, but other than that as 3s said, the move from ie7 to ie8 was trouble free (so far!).

Hi

I have installed it on 3 machines so far

1 IE8 will open but will not show pages/

1 IE8 takes 15 secs to start and then works ok.

1 IE8 just works

Dont i love Microsoft.

We have IE8 running on every computer on the network, no issues reported. Before our migration in December, the school had a mix of things, including the terrible IE6. Now everyone is on the same level at least. While IE8 is nowhere near as fast as the competition, it offers good security and features.
