Our local council is looking at getting people to volunteer for redundancy, so they can then sell the office buildings they occupy to make up £450m debt (ie. the mortgage of those buildings). Great eh? I bet front-line services won't feel a thing...

I think the idea of many of these sort of projects is that they pay for themselves over so many years. Investment in young people, helping them into work will result in more people working and therefore more taxes being paid and a higher GDP...

What really infuriates me, and I think should be illegal, is the absolute farce that my Lib Dem vote helped the Tories get in, because let's face it, this is a Tory government! How the hell can we call ourselves a democracy when your vote can simply be thrown to a party you didn't vote for simply because they decide that's what they want to do? I did not vote for Cameron!

After looking at that list I thought "anyone fairly young and trying to find a route into work is going to be absolutely buggered".

 

It looks to me like more and more people will be forced out of work, unemployment will rise even further and subsequently there will be more people claiming benefits. (If benefits don't get scrapped as well, that is).

I am picking certain ones, I don't believe they all should be cut!

 

So, same question, where is the money going to come from to invest in the investment? I don't always buy into the idea that investing in something ALWAYS provides a positive return. Its still a form of gambling, just with our taxes.

 

For instance, if we all have to take a 5%+ to pay cut for a visitors centre at stone henge, I wont be able to afford to pay to travel there and pay to get in so the investment has failed. - I know how naive that sounds but its a lose analogy.

Shouldn't it be built from profits made from tourists visits, just as a company expands?

Have to agree there as well, I honestly don't know why people vote that way... it's like they are deliberately screwing themselves. If you're an average person on an average wage... why vote for a party full of rich people who are only going to protect their own interests? (and make themselves richer). Why else would so many rich people donate so much money to said party?

And as for the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, was it not Gordon Brown who abolished the 10p tax rate? As a direct result of the Labour / Gordon Brown spending policy over the last 13 years this county now owes £153 billion !!! I may very well loose my job anytime because of these cuts but we have to reduce this debt, we can't go on spending like we used to and probably never should have been!

The country owes a lot more than £153bn... IIRC, we're at around £900bn debt.

What they don't have, for the most part is the path to do so an by poor do we mean single unemployed mother? Or lazy unemployable who cannot be bothered to take up even the most easy of jobs as they judge that society, you and I, owe them a living. Simply throwing money at people does not work. We've seen that, what we do need is a way to get people workign and excresising their own initiatives. ike it or loath it, that was what happended to a large extent in the 80's in the SE. Whilst the North, Scorland and Wales saw a massive close down of traditional industry lots of people with little education beyond high school got motivated. Ever hear the Pet Shop Boys song Opprtunities? It's a good pointer as to what was going on at the time. This is why the US succeeds in many areas the UK used to. They take risks that many in the UK are simply not willing or able to take. We've had 13 years of a govt that has effectively removed the element of personal risk from our society. We need that back I feel.

No, you voted for you local MP. No one actually votes for the formation of whatever government results.

 

And I will never understand why some liberal voters are all upset about joining the tories, I'm a libdem voter and I'm very pleased that finally we'll actually get some of our policies through, whist at the same time tempering some of the most crazy tory policies.

Better than being totally ignored in government, which is exactly what would have happened if the liberals hadn't entered a coalition. If the Tories had a minority government only, they would have simply gone back to the polls later in the year and won a thumping majority after blaming the liberals for holding them back.

Was it not Gordon Brown who created the 10p rate in the first place against Tory opposition? Things would have been different as they would have consolidated the recovery this year before the cuts to address the deficit, rather than the cuts now which will make things a lot worse.
