Hi Folks,

 

Yet again, we SmoothFolk are recruiting!

Two vacancies that might interest Edugeekers to talk about. I'll update this post with any extra details as and when.

 

Even if you don't think you match up exactly to the job description -get in touch. We may have some room for manoeuvre.

 

First up:

Technical Pre-Sales, Leeds

This role involves supporting the sales team when they present solutions to potential customers of all shapes and sizes, and involves quite a bit of travel, although you do get a desk to drive as well. Next to me, probably, you potentially lucky devils, you.

 

Update: People have asked about the hours. Officially, 0900-0530 + hour for lunch. Most days the office opens @ 0730, and there's usually some stragglers in at 19:00, so some flexibility will be expected - but it does work in both directions. Holiday I *think* is 21 + BH.

 

Customer facing, so must be presentable! Need decent networking knowledge, and *either* windows or Linux. Both obviously would be attractive, but we can teach either. Which one you are strong in will depend who helps train you This will be long on the "learning on the job" stuff. Active edugeek poster preferred and you'll likely get to go to BETT and the conferences... so if you've never been...

 

Pre-Sales engineer, Full Ad

 

Next:

Technical Support, Southampton

A more technically involved role, you will definitely need to know your networking, and have held some form of helpdesk/supporting role. More office based, this one, but in the airconditioned coolness of SmoothWall Towers (soton). You'd be answering inbound support calls by phone/email and working in our ever growing international team of support agents. Weekend shiftwork is inevitable, with pay to match though. Possibly some evening work when we are short in the US.

 

Full ad - Support engineer

 

 

In terms of salary - I really don't know for the support job (no ad yet, and it's not me recruiting that one), and for Pre-sales - well, I have a hard upper bound - but no real fixed ideas. The role is relatively junior - but with good scope for progression. Second/third job perhaps. PM me with your expectations and i'll tell you if we have a match!

Just want to say to anyone who is thinking about working for Smoothwall and unsure about perhaps leaving the happy "secure" nest of education, don't worry they are really nice people and don't bite, well Gav might do but its all harmless

 

Everyone i've ever dealt with at Smoothwall is kind, friendly, cheerful and supportive, they are a really nice bunch of people and I know I'd love to work for them, they know there stuff and the products and are willing to work with clients to solve problems and create workarounds for our weird and wonderful systems that we have to have at times in Schools

 

If anyone is unsure do contact Tom, if you don't know him or haven't met him, he is a brilliant guy and down to earth and well worth having a chat to him about the roles if your unsure or want more details

@nephilim: Yes, it is North Carolina - we have a growing "branch office" there with a handful of support agents. Same as the job in southampton really - reg'lar internal support agent. I think they would *rather* have an american - but send me your CV and I will put it in front of all relevant parties.

Shame Southampton's "catchment area" is ruined by a large expanse of wet stuff. Even our one Islander applicant (Hi!) has decided its too far

No takers mate? Come on people Smoothwall are Ace, I know some people probably think were all on back handers from them for saying it, but honest were not!!! If you lot don't take it I'll have to move to Leeds and take it for you

 

If you are worried Tom's paying us to be nice, you are not the only people that may be sceptical, but we do it as we are really passionate about them!! I remember a good scene from this years BETT, it was a prospective customer asking Gav if he had any customers he could talk to so he was usherd over to Edugeek and near enough everyone on the stand at that time, I think there were about 7 of us, were Smoothie customers I believe that guy bought in the end as well didn't he Tom / Gav?

It's the hours that are the most difficult bit as the fast ways on/off the Island stop in the evening, meaning it's slow ferries instead. I shall have to console myself here with a new SAN instead
