Adds some nice features such as Real-time application usage tracking makes it easy to determine how applications are or are not being used so customers can better manage license compliance. Virtualization enables applications to run as network services—without ever being installed—on-demand. Applications run reliably without conflicts, increasing user uptime and accelerating deployments and OS migrations. Looks good if you read the full list of features. 1

I worked for a company that used Softgrid(when it was owned by Softricity) in the past and it was an awesome product in terms of the flexibility it offered. It's about time MS offer change control for Group Policy and the software/hardware asset tool would be useful aswell. Does anyone know if it's only available for use with Vista or can you use the Desktop Optimisation pack with XP aswell?

The GPO management stuff also looks like it is finally getting to include features that should have been in there in the first place........ P

I use that and/or a d-i-y bartpe now. Yes they are very useful and you should have them, but OTOH I rarely need them. If your PCs are locked down then users won't be wrecking them by installing dodgy drivers, services etc... so that mostly leaves abrupt-shutdown-broke-the-registry and you typically need regular sys. state backups updating the contents of %windir\repair to make it worth trying to recover. My most common targets: Abruptly shutdown/crashed servers where you normally do have last-night's registry in repair (or the subdir where BExec put it). Laptops with broken disks containing the only copy of some idiot's work from the last 5 years.
john Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Ultimate is not going to be avalable via Volume Licencing, so its going to cost you a lot of £138+vats to do all your machines. Enterprise is avalable for schools u probably gotta push to get it, but it is there.

Guess that would translate to about £7.50 for us over the pond in rip-off Britain! Not too bad if viewed as an entire methodology of packaging/deploying software and auditing all of your kit. Hopefully manufacturers will start making softgrid packages available with their software to save having to image the stuff ourselves. Guess it's unlikely because of the piracy/copying implications though.

ful56_uk Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Hello, just looking into this at the momment. could I used the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack like this:- a non-domain laptop that wants to use a app stored on the network, the laptop is connect through wireless and has one of our ip address if so how is there a client you install on the laptop? cheers
gshaw Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 We've got Enterprise CALs and Software Assurance, plus it comes up in my downloads list so going to give it a try on my new test network next year (3 Quad Core machines running Server 2008 \ Hyper-V) The ERD commander is a great tool and Softgrid (OK App-V as they want us to call it now) looks a very handy technology
