I am having some troubles understanding how on earth I do the practical part for my CCNA Part 1.

Packet Tracer is a PITA and nothing like the MIMIC Virtual lab I was given to work with, and I am not allowed to use the MIMIC software.

Can anyone give me some guidence on how to use it as the tutorials are carp

Mate there really is no substitute for getiing some old routers and switches off the web and going through the practical stuff on the the real thing, that said no doubt like the rest of the world your on a budget and these things cost money. There are websites out there that offer live rack time. it pains me to recommend this one Cisco CCNA | CCNP Certification Training Site as the guy that runs it really lacks any customer service skills but i think that is mainly cos he has some really good content and it is well worth a look.

What in particular with Packet Tracer is causing you aggro?

I agree that it can be a bit clunky and occasionally things just don't work - but it is quite a useful tool to run through some simulations and see how things should work.

I even know someone that used it to plan out their corporate LAN and then just copied and pasted the config into the 'real' switches...

It's true that it's still not a substitute for the real thing - but even el cheapo second hand cisco kit from ebay will end up costing you a fair bit of money by the time you've got a couple of switches and a router.

I've just done module 3 of my CCNA, so I'm more than happy to help out or offer suggestions!

Which version of Packetracer are you using? If your part of the academy get your hands on 5.2 if you don't have it, it's the best IOS wise and allows most of the shortcuts to be used.

Edit: apparently 5.3 is out, use that instead.

semester 2 is one of the hardest: routing protocols!

I found routing protocols one of the easier bits to get my head around. The bit I’m having difficulty getting my head around is the WAN section (chapter 4 I think).

Final CCNA exam booked for 30th June :)

Although I never took the Cisco exam, I did the official CCNA course through the Open University the first time they ran the course. As well as 4 day schools at a college in Bedford where you got to use live equipment, they also had a mechanism where you could book time on their lab routers and switches which were remotely accessible.

CCNA Semester 2 was a breeze so far for me (well theory side is, practical is a different issue...practical has always been my downfall).

Out of the chapter exams, 9 100% pass marks, 1 96.2% pass mark, 1 94.9% pass mark.

Doing the practice final as we speak! :)
