48-port gigabit switch - what sort, where from and how much?

Any suggestions? There's a little place just down the road that's always done brilliant prices for network hardware but today he just shook his head and said, "Sorry, mate, we don't do 48-ports." Hmpf.

 

I'd bargained on £250 but I'm not sure whether that's realistic. No fancy features required; unbranded's fine.

I can do you 2x 24 if you don't mind unbranded...I'd also accept £250 for it provided the bursar is ok with it!

Thanks but I'm afraid it really has to be a single 48-port unit. It's for a big netbook trolley and there's only space for one 1U switch.

You'll be lucky if you get a 48 gig port switch for £250. I can get a HP 24 gig one for £210 and was looking for a 48 port one but they were silly money.

Googling around, the following two seem to be less expensive than most of the competition:

* USRobotics USR997748 Courier (£224 here)

* NETGEAR ProSafe GS748T (£430 here)

 

Timbo, my usual supplier can do a 24-port gigabit switch for £120, although this in unbranded.

Ah, we tend to stick with HP for our swtiches which live in the cabinets. Desktop switches are pretty much anything.

^ the same netgear one as you found, also has 5% discount for public sector for a limited time, probably the best you'll find for the price i guess, in this day and age it's always handy to have a managed switch, as you never know what you might want to use it for in the future, we very rarely ever buy unmanaged switches these days

Have a look at ZyXEL gear - very competitive kit at really good prices. The switch below is a smart switch so not managed like Cisco or HP equipment, but does have a simple management interface on it which can do various things. They come in at£ £440-£450ish. Well worth a look

Wireless for pupil use, yes, but I want to be able to do remote management - Wake-On-LAN, then remote login.

I'd check HP's spec sheets. I was pretty sure all 2650 had gigabit uplinks (I know the advert doesn't list them). But it might be some earlier versions didn't.

Last switch I bought was a 3Com and they have a 48 port with 4 SFP ports - model number 3CRBSG5293-UK. £361 on Probrand

Yes but I'm after gigabit on all ports. :-) You could argue that it isn't necessary for its intended use but I'd rather buy something that I can later usefully re-deploy elsewhere. To my mind, 100Mbit is old technology.

 

We've been offered one for £350 and I'm still eyeing up a few on eBay for a little under £300.

I would be very cautious of buying such a device on EBay or anywhere 2nd user for that matter.

You might be saving a few quid initially but warranty can be really difficult if you are not the origional purchaser with paperwork to support it.

 

HP are really good if you buy one that has Lifetime support but Netgear and others are loathed to help you if you bought if from anywhere other than an official reseller.

 

Nobody is going to thank you if you £300 purchase goes up in smoke in 3 months time and you have to buy another!

 

Secondly, 48/50 Port Switches tend to be very deep and have large power supplies so make sure you cabinet supports the depth and they can have a high level of ambient noise so check the dbm specs you dont want you cabinet sounding like a 747 preparing for take off!
