Dos_Box Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Well, I just remebered that as of yesterday I have been gainfully employed in various posts within IT for 10 years, but what struck me (on reflection) is how far things have come, and how over the years many little niggly horrible aspects of IT have been either made better, or replaced with even greater niggly things. So below are a few things that we had common place 10 years ago, but have now thankfully all but disappeared. 15" CRT Screens 15" CRT screen covers (remember them!) Mice with balls in Hubs 10Mbps network cards Low end Celeron processors as standard in school PCs New PCs still being supplied with 32MB RAM (Viglen, I'm looking at you here!) Have I left anything off?

I was thinking yesterday on the way to the carpark....... dot matrix printers 9pin!! Aww, I miss that werrie noise from the corner of the room. Still used one in my old job for accounts and invoices. I think they might even still be using them now, despite I keep pointing out "Look, you can buy laser versions of your Invoice paper too!" lol .. how about the real floppies, the bendy ones. I still have a load of them at home for my Atari 800 (well my dads, but I've laid claim to it for now .. my first introduction to computing and programming on that little beast, think I might have a couple of them, but we have boxes full of the old floppy floppies. To be honest, I've only just ditched a box of them from one of my schools who had kept them just in case .. I wanted to know just in case of what, so threw them! lol .. My dad of course, from when he started in IT, would say things such as Baby and all the punch cards etc that have been mentioned above .. lol ..

What I miss the most is I didn't find it quite so stressful back then, people seemed to be able to work without PCs for a short while, now less than 5 minutes away from a PC and they can't teach/work.....

We got a 5MB hard drive that came in a box the size of a switch cab. lord knows how much it cost. Our systms used 4MHz Z80s. The 6MHz version kept falling over.

I did have an old HP Server with them installed on from an old workplace too, but that bit the dust and went to the big IT Graveyard in the sky .. lol ..
