If there is a cost, I have used a company in the past that don't charge providing there are more than 30 "qualifying items". If memory serves these are usually large items like PCs, laptops, monitors, etc. After a few weeks they send you a destruction certificate for any hard drives.

What about the stuff that can't easily be recycled like motherboards, laptops that have been stripped of anything useful like memory, keyboards and screens?

 

I can get rid of whole units easily enough and usually make some money for the school, it's the other stuff we can't shift.

The local scrap man would probably take the old cases off you for nothing if they have enough metal content in them.

We used them twice last year as we were getting rid of loads of old PCs, printers, monitors, etc - in total 3 transit van loads. I spoke to one of their guys the other day and he said that they may also take old TVs but they don't count as a "qualifying item".

GreenIT Box are Fully licensed by the Environment Agency as a Waste Carrier (legally permitted to transport waste), ATF Waste Treatment Facility (legally permitted to treat WEEE) and an AATF (Authorised Approved Treatment Facility) which allows you to produce Evidence Notes recognised by the Environment Agency as part of the proof and recognition requirements of the WEEE legislation.

I like the Idea of recyling and after reading this looking around there are a few companys that will do it for free when you buy it from them and alos some that will do it for free if you have ever bought from them and just takening to the tip (scrap man) could get you a fine of £250 up as these services are for public not busniss or schools.

Our WEEE waste is collected free by SafePC Disposal of Abingdon - I get waste collection notices and disposal certificates.

It would be interesting to know how e-waste is treated when we send it for recycling..

 

Greenpeace say that it costs US$20 to recycle a computer in Europe or the US, but only US$2 in India - which is why many of the computers we send for legit WEEE disposal ends up in 3rd world countries..

 

 

Safe PC disposal say they aren't an exporter of waste and operate a re-marketing operation withn the UK.

What a great idea. It's sad that we don't dispose of our old electrical equipment more responsibly. I lived for a year in Germany and they had a timetable of separate collections for white goods, computing bits and home appliances. You left them in the street outside your place for a day and a night, then the council would come and take what the immigrants and students didn't - like a freecycle scheme without the website part!

We use DNA I.T Recycling.com - Home of Free collections! - Home here, they're free and I can't fault them - I've asked them about all sorts of weird things, and they've never refused to collect it yet! Even CD discs, which is something I didn't even think could be recycled until I read about a company that does it.

Interesting thread - it'd be interesting to hear from more schools about what their approach is. In the school I used to work at, we'd usually donate the old kit to local charities etc - not sure if they still do!

That's only any good if the kit still works, and many schools run things until they die rather than replace working equipment.

Hi,

 

We are looking for some compliant disposal of our (very) old kit (we have just had a new school built and need to get rid of some ancient computers). I noticed Virtue's 'box' system but their location is a bit of a negative (we are in northants). Anyone know of companies locally who provide this service- and dare I say it- at least 'nearly free'?
