Hence why some people cut corners with them and just sticker them up to shut Heads up and make them look tested when they have never seen a tester in there life! I am not saying I do this or agree with it but I know why they do it! Laptops, Drills, Portable Projectors, Leads, Extensions, PA systems etc all should be done often for safety but a PC that lives on a desk for 5 years is fairly pointless.

 

Fair enough PC's sat on a desk aren't getting much wear and tear but ti's amazing how many PC's and monitors i've actually failed even after testing them 3 or 4 times in different ways to try and "make" them pass. but this is why they have different lengths of time between tests fordifferent bits of kit i.e a drill should be tested every 6 months(i believe) whereas an oven in a kitchen wants doing every 2 years(i believe) we got given literature when i went on my course as to what neesd testing when, sure you could find it on the 'net.

 

So yeah sometimes it does seem a little pointless but everything can fail at some point. i've had brand new kettles fail first time out the box so you never know

I've got any number of cables of various kinds in a huge box "in case I need them"... the only ones I'm short of are USB leads as equipment never seems to be supplied with one! I really must get rid of the old printer leads!

I had 3 heaving boxes of power cabling here.

Then I decided to have a clear out.

 

Threw out all the old ones, tatty ones, short ones, and kept only the decent newish ones.

 

Now I have just 2 heaving boxes

 

Same goes for network cabling as well - I've got CAT5 coming out of my ears!

 

 

Isn't it funny how you keep all this "spare" kit "in case you need it", and then the 1 thing you actually DO need is the one thing you don't have?

It reminds me of the story that Atari made 12 million copies of ET the game for only 8 million atarti consoles. The game was terrible and atari buried 5 million copies in the desert.

That's pretty funny. Problem is that when ever you buy something as a direct replacement, you generally get a new power cable as well, so item X ends up in the bin but the cable doesn't normally fail.

Those of you who do have these going spare should contact Computer Aid International, or other such PC re-use charities. Lots of people donate them computers, but they seldom get the "incidentals" like power cables (or keyboards and mice, come to that) so they'd be more than grateful for them.

I like to replace the power cables when we put new equipment, and the old cables go with the piece of equipment, where ever that may be... But we still end up with boxes and boxes of spare ones some how.

 

What I can never seem to find is the cables with the right angled 3 pin plug on! Get them occasionaly with some of the Xerox printers, but am always short on them!
