soveryapt Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 So, ok I turned the big 30 (well big ish) so I decided to treat myself to some new hardware .. BUT IT'S TAKING TOO LONG TO ARRIVE!! lol .. MacBook Pro 15" i7 with a few tweaks (couldn't really justify the extra £1k to get the 512GB SSD though .. think the wife probably is thinking of killing me enough having spent what I have on the MBP itself! lol) But also got a shiny Magic Mouse, which I quite like despite some reviews slating it here and there, and the other new toy I'm awaiting to arrive (when released) CS5 Master Suite .. Now I just need the lovely Mac Display to sit on my desk at home to plug into! Oh, and a new DSLR would be great too, but I'll leave that for a short while, else I won't make it to a year of being married me somehow thinks! lol .. Anyway, I just wanted to share that .. what new toys are other people buying at the moment .. anyone planning on getting the iPad (or been lucky enough to play on one or import one somehow? are they really worth all the hype?) .. I have to say I'm intrigued, but then the iPhone HD (or whatever they end up calling it) may be upon us soon enough from the looks of the Gizmodo escapades ..
Gonk Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I've been wanting to buy an SLR for a while and last week I finally did the the deed and ordered one! I opted for the Sony A550 DSLR-A550Y (DSLRA550Y) : Overview : Cameras & camcorders : Sony I've just had the call to say that its arrived so I get to have a play over the weekend Ross You'll have to let us know what it's like. I've been a Canon Man to now, and though I love Sony Camcorders for capturing Video, I've never really looked at their DSLR range, but the 7FPS seems quite nice! I've been tempted by Nikons various ranges at the moment too. lol ..
Gonk Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Will gladly tell you how it goes The A550 got 89% in What Digital Camera's review. It been tempted by a Nikon D90 but couldn't justify spending all that money (getting married in Aug). There was a good deal on the Canon 450D with Jessops with twin lenses, lowepro bag and tripod. However, the 450D is about two years old now and the Sony is newer. My opposite number at Milford Haven Port Authority is a Canon man, he's recenyly upgraded to an EOS 50D. sted Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 i was looking at getting a hp slate but as that appears to no longer be a win 7 device im rethinking as slate that can be a full pc if needed sounds good a slate that runs some odd os dosent appeal at all. Other than that i want a volvo s40 but dont want to spend the cash to change cars esp after ive only had this car 18 months
Gonk Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Well...i ordered one of These on ebay, and its coming tomorrow. and i am rather excited too! Oooo nice...

mbird Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Ohhh very nice, how much that set you back? About £1500, pretty good value - seeing as I got loads of extras....

danrhodes Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 About £1500, pretty good value - seeing as I got loads of extras.... Not too bad for a camera like that then! Im a canon DSLR man :-D
mbird Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Not too bad for a camera like that then! Im a canon DSLR man :-D Nah, I didn't think so - the batteries are £100 alone - each! so its all good... ...i wanna get into DSLR(ing) if thats what you crazy kids call it. any reccomendations ? (apologies if there is any Friday afternoon spelling/grammar)
pagelad Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 i only like the idea of the ipad if it has the ability to remote desktop out to my windows 7 machine, essentially it will just be a windows 7 slate then. I did like the look of the HP slate as well but it look destined to suck!
witch Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I just played the 'ol i will get you something nice for your birthday....card. Seemed to work.... It will have to be something PRETTY AMAZING to match that sort of money
Duane_Dibbley Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 and the other new toy I'm awaiting to arrive (when released) CS5 Master Suite .. mmmmmm cs5 *dribbles* U gettin a student teacher deal? I'm extremely tempted just not sure I can afford. Although I should be getting a nice bonus for some overtime I did next month...

(apologies if there is any Friday afternoon spelling/grammar) DSLR'ing, nope I just call it Photography, or taking pictures? Its a good pass time, I've had some good results in my time with my Camera!

Sarconia Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I'm contemplating upgrading my home PC. I really do like the look of one of these 6 Cores, all running at 3.2ghz with 9MB of cache for £235, sounds like the best buy out there at the moment to me. The motherboards that are designed for it also have USB 3.0 support, stick some nice DDR3 1800Mhz RAM in there along with my current graphics card (9800GTX+) and I'll be well away. I might wait a few months first for the price of it to come down a bit though.
Rydra Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I've been eyeing up a new PC for some time now, But it'll set me back £1500-2000 to buy something properly new and shiny. My 'want' list as far as PC spec goes: Intel I7 930 USB3 + SATA 6GB support Mobo 12gb Memory ATi Radeon 5870 New Case (eyeing up the Antec 902) Corsair 750W PSU 128GB SSD 2TB 6GB SATA drive BR-RW Drive 2x 24" HDMI monitors, possibly 3d (though not sure they are worth it atm till ati bring out a 3d option, would rather spend the money on a decent monitor) I already have a 250GB, 2 identical 500GB, and a 1.5TB hard drive, so will recycle the 2x 500's into a raided pair, and keep the others to tick over the current PC as a media server, which I will turn full passive setup and stick in my bedroom or living room as a media PC!

Let me know what you think Cheers Ross
RinSewand Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Might be my monitor here but the last two look marginally over-exposed, might want to try knocking it down slightly... My next objects being eye'd up are a 430EXii Flash gun, some cactus triggers, and an 85mm f/1.8 ... damn expensive hobby!
sted Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Might be my monitor here but the last two look marginally over-exposed, might want to try knocking it down slightly... My next objects being eye'd up are a 430EXii Flash gun, some cactus triggers, and an 85mm f/1.8 ... damn expensive hobby! yup slr's are a bottomless pit into which to dump money buying bigger/faster/image stabilized lenses its very easy to spend lots of cash (currently im on 4 lenses though 1 is a replacement for another replaced a 90-300mm with a 55-250 image stabilized lense) and last lens was a 50(or was it 55mm?) f 1/8 which tbh i have barely used and to add insult to injury takes different sized filters to my other lenses lol
Gonk Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I was thinking that too.... thanks for the hint, I can go and have a play and see if I can compensate Cheers
