iPhone 3GS vs. HTC Desire

Which would you choose? I have changed my mind every 10 minutes for the past week, so I've decided to poll you lot...

Certainly the desire - even if I put aside my vast dislike for Apple and it's products, the HTC is certainly the superior device - one of a few of their current products which is a mile ahead. Would even choose a WinMo powered HD2 over an iPhone.

I know the HTC looks like it doesn't have much memory but remember you can upgrade it with micro SD up to 32gb.

 

I would go for the Desire every time. In fact, I would try and get it if my contract wasn't up until December!

A colleague has the Desire, and has found that Android has no way of letting you change Proxies for wifi. Making it useless in school. Is this the case?

My contract on my G1 is up in June and I've already told my phone company I'm having a 'free' upgrade to the Desire. The Android platform is simply brilliant.

Correct, it doesn't allow you to set proxy settings yet.

Take a look at this, I have used it in the past. If I remember correctly it will let you specify a proxy for certain conditions and locations.

MY contract's up in June, too. Currently I'm torn between the Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S.

Yes and no (Leaning towards yes). There aren't any settings so far but I've heard (ergh rumours) that they are working on it and I have been told there is a free app that allows you to set proxy settings.

I have swapped my iphone 3g for a desire. Only found out about the proxy issue after I got the phone! I've also had a few problems with the active sync integration linking to live@edu. Other than that, it is a great phone. So much faster than the iphone which makes a lot of day to day operation easier.

I personally am looking at the HTC Hero / Legend (if its out by the time I renew my contract). HTC Phones are vastly superior, due to the fact the memory can be expanded, you can write your own apps for android and use it right away! HTC all the way

I moved over from an iphone 2g to a HTC Hero and i'm very glad I did! Seems to be better than the iphone in all but a couple of respects. The way the iphone handles mp3 playing seems to be a lot nicer than the Hero, and bluetooth is really flaky with my car stereo which is annoying.

iphone all the way. my tech just got a desire its swish but i think when the iphone has better cam and flash it will rock. i love the tidyness of it..... and the fact i can set proxy

Seems to be swinging in the way of HTC so far, I'm going to have to decide by the end of the day I think and stick to it.

 

The main feature I find myself using on any phone is the camera: how do the two cameras compare? I know HTC has the higher resolution camera, but I've seen some truly awful quality photo's taken on phone cameras, regardless of resolution

How about video? I've seen iPhone's video and was very impressed, does the HTC live up? (this one's not so important, I rarely video things)

If it is any help, as a previous iPhone user I bought a HTC Hero thinking it would be a good change... and lasted about 2weeks before getting frustrated with the interface and keyboard and going back to an old iPhone 3G I had! (Also possibly worth mentioning I'm certainly not a die hard Apple fanboy either... just can't find anything as good as the iPhone!)

The Hero had Android 1.5 (an upgrade to 2.x will be out later this year) and the Desire has 2.1. Their is a world of performance and feature differnce between them. After using my Nexus One since Mid Jan I have to say it is possibly the most versetile phone I've ever used, and performance wise knocks socks off the opposition. I'll just tootle off and do some multi-tasking whilst viewing some Flash and Java based web sites

Oh, and it has REAL Bluetooth as well.

So far I'm thinking the HTC is the techies choice, having never owned an iPhone (and one thing I really do not like is having about 6 menues to go through to make a phone call!) I'm getting more and more swayed toward the HTC myself...

All that with decent battery life and the option of quickly swapping the battery if you so 'desire'

yeah when someone says to me "im getting an iPhone" i only let them off if they can give me an excuse other than its an iPhone. My brother was able to come up with a decent one "I carry an iPod and my phone, so all my music is already in iTunes, why not get a phone that can use the same library and replace the iPod", of course that does show apple domination there but i cant argue i use iTunes to manage my music and manually copy it to my n95

That's a pretty good reason for me to get an iPhone too actually, but with the battery life not being great as it is (not when compared to my current phone, 3 days of solid use on one charge!) I reckon I'll stick with the iPod for my music whichever phone I go for

Desire all the way! The app store is expanding, with free dev tools (eclipse + SDK) you can't go wrong! Getting your own apps published on the store costs only $25 as opposed to 99 for the Crapple store.

 

Plus you have more techie coolness as you have a Linux phone.

Plus it has animated backgrounds
