Hi

 

question if you do a silent install of a windows update i.e download exe and run using command line to run in silent mode.

 

if the patch is niot meant for that version of windows i.e xp sp2 patch when you have sp1 installed does it just close gracefurly.

 

As got to do load of updates for a set of xp machines at moment sp1 until county give us the go ahead.....

 

Anyway havnt got wus server at moment so was thinking will create a batch script that runs all this patches.

 

Wanted to make it future proof by having sp 2 patchs there

 

Just wanted to make sure not got any problems if we did that...

Not quite sure of your question dude but its sooo much easier to get a WSUS system setup on your DC or a member server.

 

If thats still a no no then either:

 

a) stick SP2 on and then visit http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=31886 for a list of current hotfixes which gives you all the hotfixes for post SP2 which you can use in a script

 

b) create a UA CD with SP2 and all the hotfixes, updates, etc slipstreamed too

at moment not going to stick wus (as admin network and not happy about sticking anything on admin server for various reasons)

 

As for sp 2 not going tp put that until our county say so as they have set this up in there usally wierd and wonderful way

 

so when they get there act togthier and give go ahead for sp2 will install "there solution"

 

so as got lots of updates for thigns going to have a script run that installs latest ms updates plus some of our own.

 

anyway to make it future proof going to put xp 2 updates on it just so that can run again when sp 2 is on.

 

Just want to make sure that if run sp2 patch on sp1 pc it will cancel graceful etc

I may bite bullet and install wus on server but we all know what sims is like can see it muscking whole thing up and then heads will role..

in sense of a box thats sits on network and updates your windows computers with updates you download to the box not just ms patches but other patchs.

 

Yes it would mean some osrt of person would have to each time an uopdate comes out for ms download it to linux box or provide some kind update for box i.e have it downloading from source.

Talk about leaving yourself wide open!! Why do you have to have your county supporting the admin systems?

we dont but county installed the current network and set up in weird and wonderful way and any chanage ussaly involves hours of work

 

might have found a way of getting wus installed with out going on the main server box and also over sp2 left county contact message saying that we need there sp 2 package now or we are doing ourselfs

I Still cant put SP2 on some of my older hardware it makes them run so bad it's untrue. I have tried fully updating every driver etc but to no avail. Sending print jobs is the best they freeze for about 5 mins then send. Soon as I take SP2 off they run fine :\

Just a few obvious ones you 've tried already no doubt:

- BIOS updated to latest ver? (its usual one of the reasons)

- install a slipstreamed XP with SP2 (and updates) on it? perform the same?

- put the troublesome pc's in a OU and give them a specific GPO which disables most of the SP2 new features - Security Centre, Firewall, etc etc

The county prevented SP2 on their SUS server (dunno whether its still in use) back when SP2 came out - and they had it blocked for ages after.

 

I ignored the Curriculum network pc's and put the SP2 on regardless, but left the admin ones for a while - after trying it on one, there was zero problems I had so over time put it on them all

 

By now surely there wont be any problems for you to put SP2 on. Give them a rant about windows security and stuff being more important maybe? lol

Yes I updated every driver/bios etc etc in question to no avail. I didnt however try all the disabling of the SP2 features. It is something I will look into thanks. I am currently setting up RIS and im in the process of making a fully updated source so I will experiment on one sometime soon.

Everyone here is hollering for WSUS. It is great, but if he's only got one DC and is running SIMS then there is no way he should install it on that. I hate having two SQL items on the same machine, always has given me trouble in the past.

 

If anyone else has installed WSUS (not SUS) and SIMS together on the same server I'd love to hear about it.

Fortunatly the admin machines and thus SIMS aren't my problem here. I *think* that the people who manage them for us in lancs (the westfield centre) have a SUS/WSUS server setup for the machines to update off.

I hate having two SQL items on the same machine, always has given me trouble in the past.

 

I dont know why this sould cause you trouble? i have an application server running multiple MSDE instances for sophos, wsus etc and it runs fine, only thing that annoys me is i have to install all the sql patches twice :grrr:

I take it eejit was refering to MSDE SQL 2000 [think thats the one] and Anywhere SQL [or whatever it is] for personel/finance. At least thats what we have to do until sims/powys SIMS support pull their finger out and get that into sims .net like everything else

 

WSUS shouldnt drain your server's resources too much

 

Get a cheap HP ML150 SATA based server for it It'll cost about 1k or less with the usual bits 'n' bobs and vol license

Even on SIMS.net you have to use Anywhere SQL for FMS ... the new version based on M$ SQL will not be available for at least 6-12 months.

 

It will be part of the move of Personell to M$ SQL as well.

 

SIMS.net still uses 4 different databases. SIMS.net, NOVA, Personell, FMS.

 

All schools using Capita products should be moved onto a single database by Dec 2007.
