neilmc Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Got an Iphone this weekend, and i really like it. got my e-mails setup for recieving but for some reason I cannot send e-mails, keeps comming back with an error smtp server not available. i am using my ntlworld e-mail so its using pop. Incoming e-mail pop.ntlworld.com, and outgoing e-mail smtp.ntlworld.com. Does anyone know how I go about setting this up so that it works? what am I doing wrong? Cheers Neil
Hightower Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I think the problem with your SMTP error primarily lies with the fact that you've bought an iPhone.
kmount Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Not sure about using smtp.ntlworld.com outside of the ntl network, maybe you need to enable smtp auth or such like.
tech_guy Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Virgin took over NTL - isn't the smtp setting now: smtp.virginmedia.com ???
GrumbleDook Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 SMTP.NTLWORLD.COM is aliased to SMTP.VIRGINMEDIA.COM so it should work fine. I have never bothered to setup my NTL/VIRGIN account on my iPhone so just trying it now ... I am presently trying to work through a security certificate error on smtp.ntlworld.com so will try smtp.virginmedia.com but my desktop doesn't have any problems with this (using Apple Mail on OS X 10.6)
PEO Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I set a friends pc up yeasterday to download ntl emails. he has an email account from when ntl owned the service. pop.ntlworld.com and smtp.ntlworld.com worked fine. the username will be the same as the first part of the email with out the '@ntlworld.com' I didnt have to change any thing, it just worked
Rawns Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Which network are you on? If your on 02, you can't use your own e-mail suppliers SMTP server. You have to use 02's server (smtp.o2.co.uk) Not sure if it also applies to other networks. Best to check on your networks Support section..... 1

IrritableTech Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I can... my home ISP with auth, my own, and O2's. Me too, never had an issue with using other smtps. I use googles and my own servers on o2 without any issue. How odd.
TechMonkey Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 It usual depends on whether the outgoing server uses authentication or not. If it doesn't then it will be tied to only sending mail from that domain, hence why you couldn't send any. If you take a laptop & use someone else's WiFi then you will find outgoing mail often won't work either.

My O2, BT and GMAIL smtp servers all work, you don't have to use o2's at all.
PEO Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 one thing I can't do is hook up the schools my mail to my iphone... never been sure as to why
TomH Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Mine works fine as well, on O2 using various SMTP servers, work / ISP / Personal Be aware it tries to use SSL by default for allot of accounts which if not supported by the mail server will need to be disabled. 1
