Not sure were to post this so here I am lol.

 

Just playing around with ESX and virtulisation etc.... I`ve got a test server i`m installing ESX onto, its haulting on the ethernet controller part i`m getting this:

 

"No network adapters were detected, either no network adapters are physically connected to the system, or a suitable driver could not be located. A third party driver may be required.

 

Previously I installed WinXP onto this test server to identify what the network adapter is.

 

Its a "Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet" NIC Driver

 

I`m stumped now.

Try an Intel card.

esx is fussy about network cards... see if you have an intel e1000 laying around.

Yes as said above basically your Realtek card is not suporrted by ESX. There is no way to make it work.

 

You will have to pop a new card in there and Intel are a good bet!

There's a good list of supported hardware on the VMWare website, where you can check particular servers, cards, motherboards etc. Cheapy Intels work well as stated.

I`ve got a onboard intel card in my PC however the CPU is not 64bit, tried to install ESX on another machine I had and it came up saying 64bit is required.

Intel Pro 1000 GT on a PCI card worked for me, Pro 100 won't (Gigabit minimum)

Ok so the CPU and network driver problem is sorted, I had an error while installing esx 4 "insert the installation media" I worked out from vmware communties that you need to install esx 3.5 however when installing this i`m getting:

 

"Unable to find a supported device to write the Vmware ESX Server 3i.5.0 image to"

Have you checked the HD controller against the whitelist someone posted earlier?

 

ESX is very fussy. It doesnt run on everything as it doesnt rely on patchy 3rd party drivers.

 

 

why not run it from USB?

Unless somethings changed since v3, esx should install on ide/sata but it will not use these drives as a datastore. Only scsi/sas datastores are supported. The only way around this is to put the ide/sata drive into a DAS connected to the server by SAS/SCSI cable.
