Zimbra offers Open Source email server software and shared calendar for Linux and the Mac.

We use MDaemon and I would recommend it. It is very easy to configure, runs on relatively low spec hardware (we have ours vitualised now but it ran for a long time on a very low spec box) and the support and documentation are good.

 

Not free, and licences depend on the number of mailboxes, but it works well with Outlook and has its own Webclient, called Worldclient, which is very easy to use. We have used it for about 10 years now and it is effectively install and forget once it is set up.

Why not use Google Apps or Microsoft Live@Edu, both free for educational use and don't require the purchase or provison of hardware.

What sort of info are you looking for? A read on the respective websites provides loads of info and they are both very quick and easy to sign up for. It's the configuring part which can take some time.

 

They both allow you to use your own domain. In fact I think you have to have your own domain because you have to prove you own it by chaning the MX records (that's what Live@Edu needs anyway).

A 30-day version is available, or a FREE 5-user version if you're a Home or SOHO user. They also have extensive documentation.

When we were an RM school and before we went with RM Exchange they sold us their iMail product. It was based on this product:

 

IMail Server - Windows Email Server, an Exchange Alternative

 

It is still available.

hmailserver is free, never used it before tho! sumit too look & but you could use live@edu. just need a domain name or a subdomain (mail.whatever.com) looks very good! but we use zimbra it is very easy to setup. there is a gud guide on the howtoforge website for setting it up!

Are you a techy? This is quite an important question,as I think you may be getting the worng end of the stick here. This is a high end technical forum. If you ask a question such as 'How do you set up a mail server' you won't get a step by step answer as it would take forever. The best you can hope for is a link to a knowlege base or other support article that you are expected to understand 95% of.

There is no real way of having your own free domain (if one is advertised as such there WILL be a catch).

You will have to purchase your own domain from a hosting company and usually the cheapest packages for about £5 per month will come with a mail server run by the hosting company. If you wish to host it at home then you must learn about dyndns and how edit your DNS records on the internet. Installing, configuring and maintaining a mail server is not like installing, say, Word for example. When we say things are 'easy' what we mean is tha they are easy for us who know a LOT about computers, networks and how things work in the real world. Whilst we don't mind helping people out we must know your level of knowlege first.

I'd vote for Mdaemon as well - we use it here as a demo mail server which our Advanced Higher pupils install on a mini network lab and run it with a dial up connection!

IMail Server, and if less than 10 users there is a free edition as well. You can always try the Eval for 30 days too. Not free, but the support is great, and the Premium Offering cuts out 95%+ of the spam.
