I'd vote for Mdaemon as well - we use it here as a demo mail server which our Advanced Higher pupils install on a mini network lab and run it with a dial up connection!

Our standard user (unedited RM connect version) can set their desktop background using picasa, so it doesn't seem to be disabled by default.

Anyone know a way of disabling the ability to set a Desktop Background on an RM Connect network. Pupils desktop backgrounds disappear when they log off, but they can change it once they are logged in. I can't see anything obvious in the settings for the User Types or Global Workstation Settings in the Management Console. Is there a registry fragment which would do the job?

Doesn't work for me I'm afraid - I'm still just getting "%username%" printed as a footer instead of the actual value of the variable (assuming it exists in Community Connect of course)

We are using XP stations on an RM Community Connect network. I'd like to be able to identify the dimwits who print out huge web pages and then leave the results lying around in my printer. We had a reg fragment which did this for IE5, but I can't get it to work with IE6. If I use the reg fragment below, all we get is the string %username% printing at the bottom of the page instead of its value. Presumably the variable which stores this value has been changed. Has anyone got this working? We're still feeling our way around our new CC3 network and have a weird problem with our standard user profile: Standard users can't print from MS Access 2003 (they can print from other office applications) I know the setting will be in the profile somewhere but can't find it. Short of making all my users advanced, can anyone tell me what setting to change? What possible security problem there could be with printing from Access eludes me, but that's RM for you. regards, Ian

I'm guessing that it checks every file access - it certainly checks any file on creation, so no doubt that is another factor delaying the logon process. What puzzles us is why it should start to be a problem now - nothing has changed as far as we can ascertain other than additional users (and the heat of course - we've put a data logger in the server room to see what happens over the next week)

We gave a yeargroup unlimited space in file manager as an experiment (the problem is at its worst at the beginning of certain periods when everyojne is logging on simultaneously. This seemed to improve matters, but of course the next thing that happens is that our tape backup will fail because our users are taking up too much space sigh.....

Yes we are still stuck in 1998 Recently our users are having to wait an inordinate amount of time for topic selector to complete its task (and often looks as if it has hung up) We're puzzled as nothing much has changed recently except having added the new batch of users and not yet removed the old ones. Could it be the heat? :-) We have memories of the same thing happening last year, but nothing specific. Can any kind person suggest a strategy for getting topic selector to streamline its activities (or is it file manager which is clogging things up? ) Ian

Well I managed to finish it eventually! Andrew Virnuls kindly send me the source code for his program and I've adapted it to read logs from our SSDN content engine (extended squid format) you can search the log for a username, or by using a word list (text file) and it will output the results in Excel or Notepad. Ideal if you want to track the activities of a pupil, or just check for badness (and if you put the RM filter url in the wordlist you can check for attempted badness ) If anyone wants the program just drop me a note - probably more useful if you are in Scotland and have had a Content Engine installed as part of the SSDN Ian

The machine which is creating the logs is a Cisco Content Delivery Engine - a proprietary item over which we have little or no control, so I think that we have to accept the logs as they come. This item is a pain in the butt - every school in Scotland got one - supposedly to speed up Internet access and allow teachers to pre-book content for cacheing and to publish resources, however all we have noticed is a spectacular reduction in functionality as our connection now goes through the corporate IT connection.

Back on topic again.... I'm still struggling with this - I have the source - code for an ms proxy server log analysis program, but so far I have to convert extended squid format log files to csv format before it will read them. (The fields are in a different order of course but I've managed to fix that.) I need an example ms proxy server log file to play around with. Can anyone supply me with one?

We are running all this on an RM Connect system with NT servers. The machine which creates the logs is running linux, but we can't install anything on it, so squidalizer isn't an option for us. Anyone know of a windows alternative?

When we needed to find out what a pupil has been viewing on the web, we used a marvelous tool written by Andrew Virnuls (I hope I have spelled his name corrrectly) called Proxy. It was designed to take MS proxy server logs and search for usernames or "bad" words. Unfortunately we now have logs which are in Extended Squid format, and although I found Webalizer, it seems geared to analysis of server traffic, not spotting what naughty pupils have been up to. I've temporarily set up a simple Access database which converts unixtime to "normal" time, and finds entries by uername IP address etc, but it is a bit clunky and certainly not very user friendly. Does anyone know of a tool to do this job (or know if Andrew has written anything similar which will deal with this format? Ian

We use an Access database which all staff can edit. We trust them not to erase each other's bookings, but encourage them to print out a (date and time stamped) report for the week which contains their booking just in case I import the timetable for each computer room from an excel spreadsheet at the beginning of each year It's a bit of work, but much better than taking phone calls to book the room on a paper version, forgetting to do it then have two classes appear at the same time expecting a computer room which is how we used to do it.

NFS Looks great - sadly we are still using RM connect servers - has anyone tried it on NT4? Any problems?

I'm looking for a beginners guide to php and MySql, suitable for an Advanced Higher (Scottish equivalent of A level) student. I know there is lots of good stuff on the web, but there is nothing to beat good old tree-ware. Can anyone recommend one? Ian
