stevo1565 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Hi just wanted to get a feel for what everyone else is getting to use there own car for work millage wise ? It works out at 25p a mile where i work and if you tally up the fuel prices tryres brakes servicing im out of pocket easily by the end of the year
TechMonkey Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 We get 25p as well but I'm not travelling around so much that I think wear and tear comes into it. I suppose it depends on the MPG of your cara s well, I get about 45-55 so in my head it is quite a good deal.
AngryITGuy Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 if you tally up the fuel prices tryres brakes servicing im out of pocket easily by the end of the year Don't forget to include a potential payment to your insurance company for wanting to use your car for work purposes. 25p a mile seems a little low, I use mine for work too and I'm sure it's something like 45p a mile that I get as a Casual Car Allowance. You would normally expect a lower payment per mile travelled as an Essential Car user as you also get a bulk payment each month. Casual Car users get a higher payment as they don't get the bulk payment each month or atleast thats my understanding of it.
featured_spectre Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 If I drove I could get 37p per mile for the first 3500 and then 48p per mile thereafter. Considering that my boss and I frequently go out and do over 100mile round trips, he is raking it in (his car is a hybrid and his MPG works out to be near 60mpg driving at 30mph)
jamesb Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 If you're using your own car for work you can also get tax relief. I can't remember the exact details as its been a while since I made use of it, but I ended up getting back all of the tax I paid over a year and a half due to the allowance (about £5000). If I remember correctly, you get 25p per mile for the first 10 000 miles in a year, and 10p per mile beyond that added to your tax-free allowance.
jamesbmarshall Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I used to use my car for work, when necessary, and if memory serves I used to get 33p per mile - didn't happen often - I know there was a different rate if your car was deemed necessary for you to do your job, but as mine wasn't, I got the lower rate.
MkII Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Depends on the cc of your car - the allowance is based on something small. With petrol prices rising so rapidly allowances have gone out of date quickly. Here it ranges between 25p and 35p per mile.
maniac Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Don't forget to include a potential payment to your insurance company for wanting to use your car for work purposes. If I'm using my car for work, and I have an accident in that time, I'm covered by the academies insurance. I can't remember how much per mile I get, it's reasonably generous. I travel between here and our other federated schools quite a lot, so I claim milage fairly frequently, although not as often as I should. Mike.

plexer Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Cyclists should get a rate far higher than the car ones imho. Ben
