I've read a few good comparisons online and Ruckus seems to out perform Cisco kit, it's also reliable kit so why Cisco every time? torledo Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 we have cisco stuff here can't say its a problem but we only have 100mb connections to each AP so 20 laptops 1 100mb connection is not good! i don't think the uplink speed is the issue if you've got a/g AP. That's not the bottleneck is it.

As a BlueSocket user, my preference would be Ruckus... of course Ruckus wasn't available when I got mine. Ignoring the cost factor between Ruckus and Cisco kit, the Cisco stuff has a couple of disadvantages: * More complicated to configure * [Generally] more APs are required for coverage * PITA licensing from Cisco - every little bit needs another license, plus more licenses as you expand

And Cisco trained techs the most numerous, easiest to find and most affordable. Of course, Cisco is like Fluke. More expensive than 3 ex-wives and a boat. I think you want to look at TCO. Total cost of ownership over a defined period of time.

I'd much prefer Ruckus, but I could live with Cisco if there was no choice. But, as others have stated, the Cisco kit would generally be more expensive than Ruckus, so I can't see the predicament being one of money?

Total cost of ownership over a defined period of time. Cisco Wifi is awful - hence one of the reasons they bought Meraki (the main reason being the cloud management)

You get far more coverage with Ruckus than Cisco with less access points. Im not anti Cisco all our switches are Catalyst 3750X for the edge and 4500X for the core. The Cisco wireless isn't as good as other brands.

The Cisco wireless isn't as good as other brands. Wow. That's some heavy duty/expensive kit. Why do you need layer 3 on the edge? Are you doing your inter-VLAN routing there? If each edge switch is 3750X you have enough capacity to put each client socket on it's own layer 3 routed port (for high security - probably not necessary in a school though). Going back to the original thread, as an aside, I think Cisco may originally have bought it from another vendor or bought the whole company. Edited March 20, 2014 by Bruce123

The Cisco 2960 doesn't have the following we need, by the way 2960's are L3 as well with the new IOS. Can only stack up 4 Switches with the 2960's. 3750's we can stack upto 9. 2960's don't have dual PSU 2960's can't use power stacking 3750's allow you to change modules By the time we added the stacking modules, plus the more expensive 2960's that support 10GB. More SFP's are needed and more ports on the core as we can't stack as many switches (meaning more uplinks), the price difference isn't that great. PotNoodleTech Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 I must be the only person happy here with 45 x Cisco 1142N. It's utterly reliable and seems able to cope with 32 devices on 1 AP without much noticable slowdown. All POE and Gig uplinks though so maybe that helps.

The management interface is complicated and ugly, the coverage is nowhere near as good as Ruckus and it was more expensive. If we had been looking at anything but patching one area with a coverage hole, I'd've suggested ripping it out and starting again with Ruckus. For our 1500 pupil school, we had close to 100 APs, and it still wasn't enough. So, if I couldn't have Ruckus? I'd choose Aruba or Unifi probably!
