Free Vector Graphics Apps?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Ive just found out the kids need to do vector graphics as part of the sylibus. Problem is no-one has told me about this until now so a program wasnt budgeted for.

No problem - open source will do.

Ive had a look on sourceforge and come up with Inkscape and Sodipodi, but as i know sweet FA about vector graphics i have no idea wether they are any good, or more to the point the best for the job in a school environment.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a free windows vector drawing app?

//And BTW where should i have posted this? Windows, educational software?

Inkscape is quite a nice app. I've used Corel Draw, Illustrator and Inkscape.

Took me a little getting used to and the earlier versions seemed to crash occaisionally but the current version I have installed (not sure what it is) seems to be sufficiently stable.

Is it free for UK Education? As you need to contact Google UK for a Licence for it for use in education in the uk, and have they changed the licence agreement for it to remove the usual google bits of we will monitor useage of this program and the machine its on and submit what we want to who we want whenever we want kind of bits?

I had a note in my to-do book that said install this in Resistant Materials dept.

Next time I went down there I was asked who'd wanted it on because it was detracting the kids from the 'proper and decent' programs they'd bought for lots of money and was teaching them bad habits.

Just thought I'd mention it, you might want to check with the people who'll use it as to wether it fits in or not, sometimes doing things isn't as good as you suspect it might be!
